The 2025 Korean National Team Trials entered day two with national record holder Hwang Sunwoo diving in for the men’s 200m freestyle.

With just eight competitors, the race was a timed final, with 22-year-old world champion Hwang getting to the wall first in a time of 1:47.10.

That was a modest effort compared to the monster 1:43.92 lifetime best and Asian record he established at the Korean National Sports Festival last month. That outing knocked down the longstanding Asian benchmark of 1:44.39 once-banned Sun Yang of China put on the books at the 2017 World Championships to become the 7th-fastest man in history.

Tonight it was 4x200m free relay teammates Lee Hojun and Kim Younghyun who captured the minor medals. The former logged 1:47.87 for silver and the latter produced 1:50.36 as the bronze medalist.

The women’s edition of the 200m free saw one athlete dip under the 2:00 barrier, as Jo Hyunju clocked a time of 1:58.60 to beat the pack by nearly two seconds.

That result was exactly half-a-second off Jo’s national record, a mark of 1:58.10 she notched in the heats of the event at this year’s World Championships. She ultimately placed 16th overall with a time of 1:58.72 in Singapore.

Lee Won touched in a time of 2:00.71 for silver this evening, followed by Kim Bomin who rounded out the podium in 2:00.87.

Additional Notes

  • Kim Junwoo was about three seconds off his personal best en route to winning the men’s 800m free. He turned in an outing of 7:58.83 to lead a trio of sub-8:00 performers. Behind him were Kim Minseop, yesterday’s 200m fly victor, who posted 7:59.23 followed by Won June‘s time of 7:59.91.
  • The men’s 200m IM saw Kim Minseok grab the gold, hitting a time of 1:59.63. Joining him under 2:00 territory was Kim Jihun who touched in 1:59.78 followed by Yang Seok-hyeon who clocked 2:00.26. This 2IM event was another race in which Hwang registered a new national record last month. He nabbed gold at the Korean National Sports Festival in a result of 1:57.66 to clear the 1:58 threshold for the first time in his career.
