Loyola Men & Women Claim Thomas Murphy Invite Victories

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland finished the Thomas Murphy Invitational by winning both team titles and setting four meet records on Sunday at Mangione Aquatic Center. The Greyhounds scored 3,432 points on the women’s side and 3,466.5 for the men, closing the three-day event.

Loyola’s meet records came in the men’s 100-yard freestyle, women’s 200-yard butterfly, men’s 200-yard butterfly, and the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay.

Christine Datovech set a school and pool record in the 50 butterfly, qualifying for the US Open Championships in the process with a time-trial swim of 24.00 seconds. Teammate Haley Robinson was right behind in that trial in 24.14.

Brennan Coyle posted 44.00 in the 100 free to lower the meet mark, while Riley Fried set the women’s 200 butterfly record at 2:01.73. Luke Dwyer broke the men’s 200 fly record with 1:47.26, and the relay team of Joe HayburnColin Davis, Coyle, and Derek Feldman finished in 2:56.01 for another meet standard.

Hayburn, who shared Co-Swimmer of the Meet honors with Dwyer, also won the 200 backstroke in 1:44.46. Loyola placed three more in that A final: JD Moyer (fourth, 1:47.84), Ben Schlotterer (sixth, 1:48.85), and Sam Voss (eighth, 1:51.99).

Dwyer led a deep group in the 200 butterfly. Behind his win were Cameron Shinnick (second, 1:49.58), Gavin Abelende (third, 1:50.12), Owen Glaser (fourth, 1:51.00), Hayden Bartz (fifth, 1:51.48), Timmy King (sixth, 1:51.68), and Thomas Cechini (ninth, 1:52.96).

On the women’s side, Fried’s record swim led an A final that included Julia Mason (second, 2:04.55), Faith Karr (seventh, 2:10.55), and Adrianna Caponiti (ninth, 2:14.37). Loyola also had six in the 200 backstroke A final: Lauren Lane (second, 2:01.84), Grace Dwyer (third, 2:03.47), Natalie Lomonosov (fourth, 2:04.01), Maeve Brandenburg (fifth, 2:04.37), Bryce Gold (sixth, 2:04.58), and Keira McGrath (ninth, 2:06.02).

Freshman Meghan Donovan won the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.35, with Noelle Hoffman (fourth, 2:22.84) and Hannah Oslislo (sixth, 2:23.49) also in the A final. In the 100 free, Cecilia Van Lierop was second in 51.62, followed by Gabby Jones (seventh, 52.51) and Madison Testa (ninth, 53.14).

Distance events featured Faith Karr (fourth, 17:14.68) and Ellie Davis (fifth, 17:16.78) in the women’s 1650, while Cody Miles (second, 15:54.99) and Kiernan Leary (third, 15:58.44) led Loyola in the men’s mile.

In diving, Loyola placed four in the women’s 1-meter A final: Annie Dockx (third, 234.50), Kassidy Georgevich (sixth, 211.70), Calista Fasser (eighth, 206.80), and Kate Mundorf (ninth, 200.50). On the men’s side, Thomas McCarthy scored sixth in 3-meter with 254.30, and George Ligozio was seventh at 228.75.

The Greyhounds closed the meet by winning both 400 freestyle relays. The women finished in 3:24.53, and the men’s relay set the meet record at 2:56.01.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Towson University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed the final day of the Thomas Murphy Invite hosted by Loyola on Sunday. Both teams ended in second place while Shannon Parrau was named Female Diver of the Meet and Jed Garner set a pool record in the 200 breast.

How it Happened: Women

  • Kaitlyn Besner (17:00.85), Addie Scott (17:09.21), and Danielle McCarthy (17:13.03) took all three spots on the podium in the 1650 free.
  • Dylan Gustaff was the Tigers top finisher in the 200 back with a seventh-place time of 2:04.90.
  • Emelia Erikson placed fourth in the 100 free with a time of 51.93.
  • Ellie Newman qualified for the 200 breast finals where she swam a time of 2:24.65.
  • Emily Thornett took bronze in the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.57.
  • Shannon Parrau completed her sweep of the boards winning the 1 meter dive with a score of 280.35.
  • Scott, Riley Willett, Erikson, and Summer Bontrager placed second in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:26.53.

How it Happened: Men

  • Christian Davidson set a meet record in the 1650 free taking first place with a time of 15:34.09.
  • Sean Colson finished second in the 200 back with a time of 1:44.65.
  • Daniel McLaughlin took third in the 100 free with a time of 45.09.
  • Jed Garner set a Mangione Aquatic Center record in the 200 breast with a time of 1:56.33 that is also the second fastest time in Towson history in the event.
  • Harry Herrera (2:00.45) and Geoffrey Cradock (2:01.08) came in second and third respectively in the 200 breast.
  • Anthony Mortellite was the Tiger’s top finisher in the 200 fly placing seventh overall with a time of 1:51.78.
  • Sam Tennell won the 3 meter dive with a score of 337.55.
  • Colson, McLaughlin, Jake Wade and Stephen McDonald finished fourth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:03.39.

Up Next:
The Tigers now have a few weeks off to prepare for the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason from November 19-22.
