Texas vs Tennessee

Texas hosted Tennessee for a two session meet on Friday. At the end of the night, combined team scores were 226.5-90.5. The finals session was a quick session, totaling less than an hour and a half and the stands were pretty full especially in the middle sections.

Among the excitement included a pre-meet autograph session that featured Summer McIntosh. The meet also featured a DJ, the school band, spirit squad, and a t-shirt cannon in use. The session concluded with a 400 mixed free relay as the Texas relay of Garrett Gould, Rex Maurer, Erin Gemmell, and Eva Okaro won in a 2:58.90 while Tennessee was 2nd in a 2:59.79.

Men’s Highlights (Night)

Highlighting the night on the men’s side was Nate Germonprez who swam to the top time in the men’s 100 breast this season by a second. Germonprez posted a 50.62, dropping from his 51.54 that he swam two weeks ago against Alabama. Germonprez is one of the favorites to win the event at the 2026 NCAA Championships as he was 3rd in the event this past season with a 50.29. The 100 breast graduated six of its ‘A’ finalists from this past season.

Germonprez also helped the Texas men to a win in the 200 medley relay. The relay of Will Modglin, Germonprez, Jacob Wimberly, and Garrett Gould swam to a 1:22.70. Modglin’s relay lead off of a 20.45 was just off his lead off split of a 20.32 that he swam to lead off the team’s relay at 2025 NCAAs.

Modglin earned two wins of his own, first winning the 100 fly in a 45.74, just out touching teammate Kyle Peck who swam a 45.75. Modglin’s other win came in the 100 back as he touched in a 44.96.

After winning the 100 free in the morning session, Gui Caribe of Tennessee swam to another win at night, this time touching first in the 50 free. Caribe won in a 18.98, in-line with his 18.92 relay lead off from the morning session.

Other Men’s Winners:

Women’s Highlights (Night)

Highlighting the women’s side of the night was Erin Gemmell who swam to the #4 time in the 200 free this season with a 1:42.64. Gemmell has a lifetime best of a 1:42.32 from 2025 SECs. Tonight’s swim marked the 6th time she has been in the 1:42 range, although this is the earliest in the season for her ever.

Also posting the #2 time in the NCAA this season was Jillian Cox who swam to a 4:33.91, dropping almost two seconds from her 4:35.74 that she swam against Alabama. Cox has a lifetime best of a 4:30.68 in the event from midseason last year and won the event at 2025 NCAAs in a 4:31.58.

The Tennessee women had two individual wins on the night. The first came from McKenzie Siroky as she won the 100 breast in a 57.78, the #3 time in the NCAA this season. Siroky was just off her time from 2025 NCAAs as she swam a 57.41 for 3rd then and she has a lifetime best of a 57.27 from 2025 SECs.

After being out-touched in the 100 free by 0.01 seconds in prelims, Camille Spink earned the win in the 50 free at night. She touched in a 21.43, finishing ahead of Eva Okaro of Texas who swam to a 21.62. Spink’s best time in the 50 free is a 21.23, and her time sits at #2 in the NCAA this season.

Emma Kern helped Texas to a win in the 200 medley relay as Kern led off in a 24.43 and was followed by Piper Enge, Campbell Stoll, and Okaro as they earned the win in a 1:35.40. Kern earned her own win in the 100 back posting a 52.51 while Stoll swam to a 51.35 in the 100 fly which marks the #2 time in the NCAA this season. Only Virginia’s Claire Curzan has been faster with a 50.06.

Yo peep McKean’s split on the breaststroke of the 2 medley. Idk if it’s like a soft touch on back cause his takeout split is a little wonky, but if 22.26 is real that’s like top 3 all time at a dual.

Tenn got spanked. Some observations:

1a. Roster size of 22 is going to have a major effect on men’s dual meets. TN is at 22. TX at 29. Looks like Gui was injured at night (only 1 swim) but some of the swimmers were racing events they have no business swimming at an SEC meet.

1b. Think that makes versatile recruits even more valuable moving forward if coaches care about dual meets vs 3-event champ lineups.

2. Uli Saravia can’t start soon enough. We desperately need some backstroke help. I know Kos wasn’t there either. Not claiming he would’ve made a difference in this meet, but just general about Tenn.

3. Same with Hirai. Sprint fly/back definitely… Read more »

for sprint back theres jillian crooks but i think shes been injured. regan rathwell also will be returning. i dont think i registered tho how impactful the graduating class was tbh. they might take a step back this season before they take a step forward next season.

yup texas women are looking pretty scary atm and the next 2 classes theyre bringing in are also very dangerous… for some reason i feel like their depth has not be registering w ppl — maybe bc the team has so many medium impact names but not many super recognizable high impact names? their problem as always will be just to be on form at ncaas

Yeah Crooks did back on 2MR and fly on 4MR. As discussed on season preview, think her success dictates a huge portion of our success as a team. Hope she can get healthy and return to her HS form.

Rathwell swam in the AM, but not at night. Not sure if anyone knows why, but she is with the team.

Atleast the Vols can go back to Tennessee today. The longhorns have to stay in that god forsaken state of Texas.

Nate Germonprez has suffered more than his fair share of heart-break, and, God knows, he’s put in the hours of work — all to finally arrive at some SUPERB results and a bit of well-earned public recognition. I saw him as a freshman with tremendous potential — and he has born it out. Now, I hope we’ll see him in LA/28. Hang in there, man!

Campbell mckean 22.26?!!

If that’s real he just became the 3rd fastest ever behind smith and bell, right ahead of Marchand

There must be some sort of timing pad issue, since it shows Kyle Peck leading off backstroke in 22.64, which would be slow for his standards.

Given his other times at the meet tho I would believe that he went 22.64. It does have mckean at a 0.00 reaction time so we’ll see if there’s a video

Live stream last night is now available for replay, it looks plausible after seeing the gap between peck and modglin but no watch on it

This man isn’t leaving Atlanta without individual NCAA titles

Unfortunately his new teammates improvement curve might get in the way of that.

I dunno, Nate tapers pretty well and he sure asserted his place at the top of the heap on Friday. Both distances.

If McKean really went 22-mid on the medley relay then they’ll definitely scrap it out for that spot.

Can you imagine going from 52 mid in HS to 50.3 as a college sophomore and thinking you’ve got a relatively clear shot to NCAA titles and international teams then a high schooler switches his commitment to your school and develops into a 51.2 SCY and 58.9 LCM swimmer?

What I see is the team sharpening each other. Nate has improved at a steady rate while at UT and will be a favorite this March. If he gets second to a teammate, that’s okay.

I’m gonna be honest, can’t imagine he’ll see it that way…
