WASHINGTON – After two consecutive meets on the road, American University swimming & diving returned to campus hungry for a win. AU posted a dominant performance, as the Eagles won 23 of 26 events against Catholic University to collect dual meet wins for both the men’s team and women’s team.
Notable Results
- On the women’s side, many AU swimmers competed in events they don’t typically specialize in, with relay teams also mixing things up from the usual lineups.
- Both 200 medley relay victories went to Eagles as they started the meet off strong.
- Stepping up in place of the usual suspects in the women’s 1000 free, sophomore Claire Mosher won with a time of 10:50.98.
- Sophomore Luke Martens won the men’s 1000 free with a time of 9:52. He later won the men’s 500 free with a time of 4:44.41.
- Sprint specialist Grace Gilbert hung on to win the 200 free in 1:57.76 after being out in :55 flat. Junior Kate Williams and sophomore Hailey Rees finished in second and third, respectively, and were both under 2:00 as well.
- Junior Lucas Standridge and freshman Matthew Pistorino went 1-2 in the men’s 200 free, with Standridge winning in 1:45.68.
- Seniors Isabel McGovern and Dylan Moulton finished 1-2 in the women’s 50 free, with McGovern sprinting to a time of 24.83.
- The men followed suit in the 50 free with freshman Gavin Shifflett and sophomore Charlie St. Louis. Shifflett won with a time of 22.01.
- Sophomore Marin Priddy made a rare appearance in the women’s 200 IM, but commanded the race nonetheless with a winning time of 2:09.76.
- Freshman Van Paul picked up his first two individual collegiate wins in the men’s 200 IM (2:00.93) and the men’s 100 breast (1:00.24).
- Juniors Sam Kohm and Fiona McMahon took wins in the men’s 100 fly (51.95) and women’s 100 free (54.30) respectively.
- Freshman diver Alex Way won the men’s 3-meter, and senior Peyton Thurman won both the women’s 1 and 3-meter.
- In the men’s 100 back, the trio of sophomore Ryan Pursley and juniors Connor Florence and Henry Bysshe went 1-2-3 for the Eagles. Pursley’s winning time was 52.91.
- The freshman duo of Lucy Penna and Abby Rothrock teamed up for a 1-2 finish in the women’s 500 free with times of 5:13.43 and 5:14.66, respectively.
- McGovern, Penna, freshman Maia Alston, and sophomore Demetra Bicos closed the meet out strong for the women with a decisive 200 free relay win.
- The quartet of St. Louis, Standridge, Shifflett, and Florence came from behind to win a gritty men’s 200 free relay by five hundredths of a second, ending the meet on a highlight.
- The final team scores had the women winning 155-53, and the men winning 146-80.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic women’s swimming and diving team took on American on Saturday afternoon and fell to the Eagles, 155-53.
Despite the loss on Saturday, the Cardinals had several solid performances throughout the meet. Anna Dymek put together a solid all around day, starting things off by taking first place in the 100 butterfly. She narrowly picked up the win by .05 seconds with a personal-best time of 59.35. She also came away with a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:09.94.
Delainey Brandt was the one who bested Dymek in the 100 breaststroke as she swam a season’s-best time of 1:08.67 to narrowly top her teammate. Brandt also competed in the 200 freestyle and finished with a time of 2:01.87.
Claire Brockmann swam in the 50 freestyle and finished in third place, less than second behind first place, finishing the race at 25.53. Adriel Marrero and Emily Blaskovich placed second and third respectively in the 100 freestyle with times of 56.53 and 56.69.
Grace Kelly, Blaskovich, Brockmann and Marrero were a part of the 200 freestyle relay team and swam to a second place finish with a slightly slower time than the first place team as they finished at 1:43.39.
The Cardinals next meet will be their first home one of the season on Saturday, October 25 when they take on Scranton. The meet is set to start at 1 pm.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic men’s swimming and diving team took a short trip on Saturday afternoon to take on American. The Cardinals fell 146-80 in the meet but had a few personal best performances throughout the action.
Teddy Tsakumis topped the field in the 100 freestyle coming in with a time of 47.56 which was his personal best to help him come away with a first place finish. Alexander Tsakumis came in third place in the 200 freestyle as he posted a personal best time of 1:49.51.
Benjamin Lutcher also came away with a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke as he clocked in with a personal-best time of 1:01.72 which was nearly two seconds faster than anyone else in the field. Colin Raue and Reid Knuckles came in second and third place respectively in the race with times of 1:03.60 and 1:12.90.
On the diving board, Gabriel Hermann came away with a first place finish in the one-meter dive, finishing with a score of 244.87. Hermann also finished in second in the three-meter dive with a score of 221.17.
Catholic started the meet off with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay with the team made up by both Tsakumis’, Bill Purcell and Jack Thompson. They were just nearly edged out for first place, clocking in at 1:36.21. The same team swam the 200 freestyle relay, except for James Caldwell replacing Purcell, and the Cardinals also came in second in that relay by just .05 seconds with a time of 1:27.31.
John Holler swam a solid race in the 500 freestyle, coming in second place with a time of 4:53.46.
The Cardinals will have their first home meet of the season on Saturday, October 25 when they welcome in Landmark foe Scranton. The meet is set to start at 1 pm.
