ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Lakers snatched wins on both men’s and women’s sides against McKendree, Hope, and Saginaw Valley after day two of competition.

On the women’s side, the final scores were:

  1. GVSU 1362
  2. Hope 776.5
  3. SVSU 316
  4. McKendree 294.5

In the 200-yard freestyle, Lucy Hedley touched the wall first with a time of 1 minute, 50.42 seconds. Linda Frick finished third for the Lakers.

Katie O’Connell won the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:22.16, and Gaia Tomaselli placed third at 4:37.64.

Vittoria Proietti finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.61, while Alice Persson took third at 2:03.17.

Hedley also grabbed first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.32. Freshman Avery Rottier took second with a time of 51.80. Elliott McAlpine took home first place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.92. Right behind her in second was Sara Alvarez (2:18.90), and Liv Geiger finished third.

In the 200 butterfly, Kelly Shortall finished second at 2:08.18, and Tomaselli took third at 2:09.02. Rottier made a statement in the 100 butterfly, winning her first collegiate event with a time of 57.09. Shortall finished fifth.

The relay team of Proietti, Villamil, Rottier and Hedley took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.39. Two additional Grand Valley relay teams finished third and fourth.

The women’s 400 relay team finished first place with a time of 3:25.44. Members of this relay include Zeinert, Rottier, Proietti, and Hedley.

In women’s diving, Olivia Kutsche once again secured first place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 272.00. Bella Larson (second), Bradleigh Palmer (third), Emi Goto (fourth) and Macy Polasek (fifth) all placed in the top five for the Lakers.

On the men’s side, the final scores were:

Raul Briceno finished first in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:20.77. Freshman Berk Boz made his debut with a third-place finish at 9:32.44.

In his debut race, freshman Matti Gaebler won the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:00.48. Moritz Hesse placed second at 4:05.36.

Anton Rauch took first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.67, followed closely by Jan Matejczuk in second at 1:50.32. Evan Scotto DiVetta touched the wall at 43.39 to take first place in the 100 freestyle. Mahmoud Abdelkarim and Carysn Christofell finished second and third, respectively.

Junior Andrew Goh won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:00.60, while freshman Jason Yeou placed third at 2:05.92. Thomas Ferguson finished third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.15.

In the 200 medley relay, Matejczuk, Goh, Ali Usama and Scotto DiVetta combined for a first-place finish at 1:27.51. Another GVSU relay team took third with a time of 1:30.14.

The men’s relay team touched the wall at 2:56.66 to take first place for the Lakers. The members of this relay are Scotto DiVetta, Abdelkarim, Matejczuk, and Chrisoffel.

In men’s diving, Carter Wood scored 324.65 to take first place in the 1-meter dive. Max Schwickert finished third with a score of 271.60.

The Grand Valley State Lakers will travel to the Venema Aquatic Center on Saturday, Oct. 18, for a tri-meet against Calvin University and Saginaw Valley State at 1 p.m. More information to follow.

Sophomore Emme D’Errico and freshman Makenzie Baldwin delivered first-place performances for the Hope College women’s swimming and diving team during a four-team meet hosted by Grand Valley State University this weekend at the Holland Aquatic Center.

The two-day meet featured three NCAA Division III opponents: GVSU, Saginaw Valley State University and McKendree University (Illinois).

D’Errico (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Farmington) clocked a winning 100-yard butterfly of 2 minutes, 7.5 seconds.

Baldwin (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) posted a first-place 100 backstroke of 56.48.

Hope finished second in the meet, totaling 776.5 points. GVSU won with 1,362 points, followed by the Flying Dutch, SVSU (316) and McKendree (294.5).

The Orange and Blue posted 11 more swims in the Top 4, including five more than were second-place.

In the 100 backstroke, Baldwin placed second at 2:02.42. Senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) was fourth at 2:05.38.

In the 200 individual medley, Gidley recorded a runner-up effort of 2:05.78.

Hope posted second-place swims in three relays:

  • 200 freestyle at 1:33.94 from Gidley, freshman Claudia Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven), sophomore Emmy Sower (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) and senior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville);
  • 200 medley at 1:44.73 from Gidley, Busse, freshman Meg Pinkerton (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Pioneer) and Wasiniak;
  • 400 medley at 3:51.29 from Baldwin, Gidley, Busse and Wasiniak.

Wasiniak and Busse placed third and fourth, respectively, in both the 50 free and 100 free.

Wasinaik went 23.68 in the 50 free and 51.86 in the 100 free. Busse went 23.75 in the 50 free and 51.95 in the 100 free.
D’Errico took third in the 500 freestyle at 5:10.53. 

Wasiniak finished third in the 100 butterfly at 57.74.

Gidley was fourth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:05.04.

In 1-meter diving, freshman Grace Dawson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) placed fourth with 234.00 points.

Hope’s next meet is the MIAA Invite on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11:30 a.m. at Holland Aquatic Center.

A third-place, 200-yard freestyle relay led the Hope College men’s swimming and diving team during a two-day meet against three NCAA Division II opponents this weekend at Holland Aquatic Center.

The Flying Dutchmen’s relay of junior Josh Bordovsky (Herndon Lakes, Virginia / South Lakes), junior Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Missouri / Ozark), freshman Nolan Smith (Buffalo Grove, Illinois / Buffalo Grove) and sophomore George Marsh (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Seaholm) clocked a third-place swim of 1 minute, 23.59 seconds.

Hope took second place with 624 points over 38 events Friday and Saturday, trailing NCAA Division II Grand Valley State University, which scored 1,264.5.

The Flying Dutchmen finished ahead of NCAA Division II opponents: Saginaw Valley State University (439) and McKendree University, Illinois (438).

Hope recorded fourth-place efforts in three events and fifth-place ones in six more.

Sophomore Luke Wyrick (Glen Ellyn, Illinois / Glenbard West) posted a fourth-place, 200 breaststroke of 2:07.10 and a fifth-place 400 individual medley of 4:10.53.

Bordovsky clocked a fourth-place 200 IM of 1:53.31.

The fourth-place 200 medley relay of Bordovsky, sophomore Luke Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton), sophomore Everett Cox (Sugar Land, Texas / Logos Prep) and Eisenmann recorded a swim of 1:33.12.

In the 200 free, Cox finished fifth at 1:41.41.

In the 100 breaststroke, Newcomb took fifth at 57.17.

In the 100 backstroke, freshman Jack Szuba (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) placed fifth at 52.56.

In the 200 back, freshman Ethan Esparza (Rosenberg, Texas / Thomas H. Randle) finished fifth at 1:53.06.

In the 200 butterfly, junior Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) took fifth at 1:55.07.

In 1-meter diving, freshman Finn Sanders (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville) was fifth with 224.10 points.

Hope’s next meet is the MIAA Invite on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11:30 a.m. at Holland Aquatic Center.

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program competed at the Grand Valley State University Quad Meet on Friday and Saturday, taking on host Grand Valley, Hope College, and McKendree University at the Holland Aquatic Center. The Cardinals placed third overall with 755 combined points, as the women finished third with 316 and the men took third with 439.

SVSU saw several standout performances and personal-best marks across the two-day event. Lexi Hieber (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western HS) earned a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:19.75). Samantha Fowler (Wellington, New Zealand / St. Hildas School) claimed runner-up in the 400-yard individual medley (4:29.22) and added an eighth-place finish in the 100 free (53.19). On the men’s side, Alvaro Rodriguez (Guadalajara, Mexico) led the way with a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (1:49.09) and a third in the 100 fly (48.61).

Other notable swims included A’lmos Szedlak (Pomaz, Hungary / Stamina TK) finishing third in the 400 IM (4:07.37) and contributing to SVSU’s 400-yard freestyle relay that took fifth in 3:03.27. Hadyn Gould (Adrian, Mich.) and Lyon Hall (McFarland, Wis.) both posted strong results—Gould won the 100 backstroke (49.29) and placed third in the 200 backstroke (1:52.62), while Hall earned a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:40.68) and anchored the relay team.

On the women’s side, Nina Pavlovic Cano (Stockholm, Sweden) placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (58.12) and sixth in the 200 fly (2:13.83). Mya Ketel and Kaylene Darbee (Bay City, Mich. / John Glenn HS) continued to contribute in the breaststroke events, with Ketel placing sixth in the 200 breast (2:26.06) and Darbee earning 12th in the same event (2:30.73).

In diving, Rory Kauffman (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt HS) took second in the 3-meter dive (294.40). On the women’s side, Layla Winklepleck earned a ninth-place finish on the 3-meter board (213.75).

SVSU also performed well in relays, as the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Carolina Heinz, Hieber, Fowler, and Roni Markwood (New Baltimore, Mich. / Anchor Bay HS) finished third in 3:31.22.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley swimming and diving continues its season next Saturday, October 18, as they head to Grand Rapids, Michigan to compete against Calvin and Grand Valley.

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The McKendree Women’s Swim and Dive team took fourth at the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Invite this weekend.

McKendree started out solid in the first event with Tumi MacdonellHelena Kurtz, Beatriz Souza and Jocelyn Zgola grabbed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.43. Following that event, Luiza Dias earned a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, as she finished with 5:12.51.

Kurtz had the highest finish for the team in the 100-yard butterfly, coming in second place securing a time of 57.63. Zgola also finished fourth individually in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.72. Macdonell earned a ninth place finish out of 28 competitors in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.42.

Souza, Chiara Fuerst, and Rylee Sitton competed in the 200-yard breaststroke, completing the event with times of 2:24.07, 2:30.78 and 2:31.23 finishing fifth, 13th and 14th, respectively.

Elena Argabright also earned a top 10 finish in the 500-yard freestyle with 5:23.22 securing a ninth-place finish.

Next, McKendree will be back home for a head-to-head meeting with Saint Louis University on October 24th and 25th at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The McKendree Men’s Swim and Dive team finished fourth at the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Invite this past weekend.

Sophomore Vova Gavrysh had a highlight weekend in Allendale, winning three events for the Bearcats. He captured his first win of the meet in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:48.09. Gavrysh’s next win came in the 200-yard freestyle stopping the clock at 1:36.43, beating the next closest competitor by two seconds. His third win came in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing with 1:48.18.

Gavrysh also joined Tyson UptonJoey Ovanic and Phineas Theall to get fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, combining for a time of 1:23.69.

Jakub Rynkiewicz grabbed a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:27.21. Caden Brooks secured a top five finish in the 400-yard individual medley finishing with a time of 4:09.50, getting fourth in the event. Upton got an individual top five finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.98.

Gavrysh, Upton, Brooks and Theall combined to get third in the 400-yard freestyle finishing with a time of 3:02.62.

Luke Ashbury, David HammondCarson Olson, and Noah Brereton all earned top 10 finishes at the GVSU Invite.

Next, McKendree will be back home for a head-to-head meeting with Saint Louis University on October 24th and 25th at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.
