Iowa Opens Season with 224–74 Win Over Northern Iowa

The University of Iowa opened its 2025-26 campaign with a commanding 224–74 victory over Northern Iowa at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center. The Hawkeyes swept all 16 events en route to a home-opening victory.

Freshman Payton Flowers and junior Olivia Swalley led the way with multiple event wins each. Flowers claimed both the 50 freestyle (23.57) and 100 freestyle (51.83), while Swalley took victories in the 200 freestyle (1:51.08), 200 breaststroke (2:19.18), and 200 IM (2:03.81).

Hope Schimming swept both backstrokes, clocking 56.11 in the 100 back (significantly faster than this time last season, when she clocked 57.00), and 2:04.76  in the 200 back (over a half second faster than she was in in October of last year), respectively, while Josie Hood won the 200 fly (2:06.91).

The Hawkeyes opened with a win in the 200 medley relay, featuring Crain, Swalley, Flowers, and Rachel Dildine (1:42.72), and closed with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay as Dildine, Flowers, Olen, and Kemp touched in 3:29.25.

On the boards, senior Lainey Woodward swept both diving events, earning 297.25 points on the 1-meter and a career-best 308.15 on the 3-meter. Freshman Zita Bernatsky followed closely in both (277.10 and 297.40).

For Northern Iowa, junior Morgan Meyer took 3rd in both the 100 free (52.76) and 200 free (1:53.77). Sam Oeltjen finished 2nd in the 200 fly (2:10.78, over two seconds faster than October of 2024), and Morgan Raether added a 3rd finish in the 100 back (58.27).

The Panthers closed the meet on a strong note, finishing runners-up in the 400 free relay as Abby Lear, Meyer, Raether, and Lauren Nedder combined for a 3:32.99 finish.
