BOTR Distance Freestyler Alex Grocholski Sends Verbal to Virginia Tech for 2026

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Alex Grocholski of Manassas, VA, and Occoquan Swimming will join the Virginia Tech men’s class of 2030.

Grocholski was mentioned in our “Best of the Rest” section in SwimSwam’s most recent ranking of the top 20 recruits for the class of 2026.

I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Virginia Tech! I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for helping me get to where I am today. I would also like to thank Coaches Sergio, Albert, and Mason for believing in me and giving me this awesome opportunity. I can’t wait to be a part of such a great team! GO HOKIES! ♥️🧡

The distance freestyler had a stellar showing at the NCSA Spring Championships (SCY) in March, where he set four personal bests on the week. His showing in the 500 free ended in a 3rd place finish and a new best time of 4:22.58.

The success also came in a slew of other events as well; Grocholski’s 400 IM finished 5th in 3:49.60, his 1000 free ended up 7th in 9:10.95, and his 200 free rounded out his lifetime best performances with his 1:38.41, finishing 19th.

Earlier this summer, Grocholski finished 24th in the 200 free (1:56.58) and 83rd in the 200 butterfly (2:12.64) at the Futures Championships (LCM) in Greensboro.

Best Times SCY:

  • 200 Free: 1:38.41
  • 500 Free: 4:22.58
  • 1000 Free: 9:10.95
  • 1650 Free: 15:38.58
  • 400 IM: 3:49.60

The Virginia Tech men finished 6th at last season’s ACC Championships. Looking at Grocholski’s best times in comparison to those championships, he would have finished 31st in both the 500 free and 400 IM, and 24th in the 1650 free.

Virginia Tech’s men’s distance freestyle was not their strong suit a year ago (and not something that was heavily recruited for this upcoming season either), only scoring 25 points between both the 500 and 1650 freestyles at ACCs last season. Lee Naber is the strongest returner for the Hokie men in the 500 and 1650, but will graduate by the time Grocholski comes into Blacksburg.

Where Grocholski could make a big impact is in the 400 IM; his top time is faster than the top returner from last season for Virginia Tech (Eli Martin at 3:51.24), and faster than the top incoming freshman time (Clem Camacho in 3:50.86).

There is room for Grocholski to grow in the next year and beyond, and with the way his events lay out at the conference level, he could make some moves up into scoring position at ACCs as a freshman.

Virginia Tech’s 2026 recruiting class now includes Grocholski, in addition to Matthew Wolfle and Erkhes Enkhtur.
