There were seven medal events on day 3 of the World University Games, which helped a lot of teams move their way up the rankings, but ultimately the United States only extended their lead.
At the end of today, the United States led the medal totals in every category, having 17 total medals to the 2nd place team, Japan’s, five.
The Americans added four golds, two silvers, and three bronze medals for nine total medals across the events today.
Emma Weber earned their first individual gold of the evening, touching first in the women’s 50 breaststroke. From there, Jake Mitchell won the men’s 200 free, Mila Nikanorov won the 800 free, and the American team of Will Modglin, Benjamin Delmar, Leah Shackley, and Maxine Parker won the gold in the mixed 4×100 medley relay.
Japan made strides to move up the rankings today, earning their first gold in the men’s 200 IM, where they also earned a bronze. Ruka Takezawa also added to Japan’s medal total with her bronze in the 800 freeestyle.
South Africa, France, and Portugal all found their way onto the medal table today as well, with South Africa racking up three medals in just the one session, one of each color.
Their gold came from the monster swim by Pieter Coetze to win the gold in the men’s 100 backstroke. Lara van Niekerk won the silver in the 50 breaststroke, and the team won a bronze on the medley relay.
