Florida High School Class 2A State Champion Rex Biebel Commits to Grand Canyon for 2025-26

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Rex Biebel from Tarpon Springs, Florida, has committed to swim and study at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. He will join the Lopes in the fall of 2025.

“I am very excited to announce my commitment to swim and study at Grand Canyon University. First, I want to thank God for guiding me through this process. Next, I want to thank Coach Cashel and Coach Sue for getting me to this point. I also want to thank my parents, family and friends for your endless support and belief in me. Lastly, I want to thank Coach Steve for giving me the opportunity to swim and compete at the Division 1 level. Lopes Up!”

Biebel, who began swimming in California at Canyons Aquatic Club and moved to Florida at the age of 12, recently graduated from Countryside High School in Clearwater with a 4.3 GPA. Biebel joined Bobby Finke in being inducted into the school’s hall of fame. Biebel won the 500 free and placed 6th in the 200 free last November at the FHSAA Class 2A State Swimming and Diving Championships. He clocked a massive PB in the 500, dropping 5.5 seconds to go 4:32.45. His 200 free (1:43.94) was also a lifetime best (-1.2 seconds), as was his 50 back leadoff on the 200 medley relay (25.02, -.9).

Biebel does his year-round swimming with West Florida Lightning Aquatics. He is a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 1000 free and 200 back and a Futures qualifier in the 500/1650 free and 400 IM. A member of Florida Swimming’s Southern Zone Open Water team, he medaled in the 5k in Kentucky last year.

Best SCY times:

  • 1650 free – 15:41.20
  • 1000 free – 9:17.70
  • 500 free – 4:32.45
  • 200 back – 1:49.46
  • 100 back – 51.72
  • 400 IM – 4:02.59

Grand Canyon men finished 4th out of 6 teams at the 2025 WAC Championships. Biebel’s best times in the 1650 free (13th), 500 free (‘C’ final), 400 IM (‘B’ final), 100 back (‘C’ final), and 200 back (‘C’ final) would have added to the Lopes’ tally.

Biebel will join the GCU class of 2029 with Evan Niemeyer. The Lopes move to the Big West Conference in 2025-26.
