Filip Nowacki Swims 58.10 in the 100 Breast (SCM), Becomes #10 Brit All-Time at Only 17

2025 International Island Games

Coming off a breakout meet at the European Junior Championships in June, Filip Nowacki of Great Britain has dropped a new best time in short course meters.

Representing his native island of Jersey, Nowacki swam 58.10 to win the six lane event final. That undercuts his previous lifetime best of 58.98 from December.

The 17-year-old Nowacki now ranks 2nd among British breaststrokers in short course meters over the last year, behind only Archie Goodburn, who went 57.81 in November. He also moves into the top 10 Brits all-time in the event.

He was previously tied as the fastest 17-year-old in British Swimming history, but has now blown away that matching mark with David Murphy by almost nine-tenths of a second. It also easily breaks his own Jersey Record in the event.

Top 10 British Swimmers All-Time, 100 SCM Breaststroke

  1. Adam Peaty, 55.41 (2020)
  2. Ross Murdoch, 56.67 (2019)
  3. Michael Jamieson, 57.52 (2013)
  4. James Wilby, 57.61 (2018)
  5. Craig Benson, 57.79 (2019)
  6. Archie Goodburn, 57.81 (2023)
  7. Andrew Willis, 57.84 (2016)
  8. James Gibson, 57.91 (2008)
  9. Kristopher Gilchrist, 57.97 (2009)
  10. Filip Nowacki, 58.10 (2025)

The runner-up in that race, Bartal Erlingsson Eidesgaard, broke a Faroese Record with his 1:00.51. That knocks a second-and-a-half off his own record of 1:02.08.

Both Nowacki and Eidesgaard broke the old Meet Record that was set by Guersney’s Ian Black in 2015.

Nowacki is entered in a Hosszu-esque 13 races at the meet, and so far has won two golds and a silver. Besides the 100 breast, he also won the 200 IM individually (1:59.17), breaking Robbie Jones’ Jersey Record, and swam a leg of the silver medal winning 200 medley relay, which finished 1.4 seconds behind Isle of Man.

The Millfield School trainee is also scheduled to swim the 50 fly, 100 fly, 50 breast, 200 breast, and 100 IM individually.

Nowacki won gold in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and silver in the 50 breaststroke at the European Junior Championships last month, plus two relay gold medals. In the process, he broke both the European Junior Championship and the European Junior Record in the 200 breaststroke in long course (2:08.32), plus several British Age Records.

Other Early Highlights From the Meet:

  • Guernsey swimmers Chloe Brown (4:43.96) and Oriana Wheeler (4:51.18) went 1-2 in the women’s 400 IM. Brown, born in 2006, shattered her own Guernsey Record of 4:46.10 set in December 2024. She trains at Mount Kelly in England.
  • Brown also won the 200 free in 2:00.47, four-and-a-half seconds clear of the field. That knocked a second-and-a-half off the Guernsey Record of 2:02.05 set by Kristina Neves at this meet in 2011. She added a third gold by swimming a leg of Guernsey’s winning women’s 200 medley relay.
  • Kara Hanlon from the Western Isles of Scotland (aka the Outer Hebrides) won the 50 breaststroke in 30.82, just missing her lifetime best. She has represented Great Britain internationally.

Great to see this event covered- so interesting to see big swimmers who started out on small islands

What are the requirements to be part of the International Island Games?
is it that it is not its own country /continent? Maximum population? I don’t think size can be a requirement because there are not many areas larger than Greenland.
