Freestyler Izzy Torello to Remain In-State, Compete for Sacred Heart University in the Fall

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Freestyle specialist Izzy Torello has announced her decision to remain in-state and attend Sacred Heart this fall.

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Sacred Heart University! Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way, I can’t wait for what the future holds. Go Pioneers!”

Torello hails from Guilford, CT, only about 34 miles east of Sacred Heart’s campus in Fairfied, CT. A recent graduate of Guilford High School, Torello represents the Soundview Family YMCA Stingrays at the club level. As a member of the Stingrays, she has competed at multiple YMCA National Championships, most recently swimming at the Short Course National Championships in April. At that meet, she posted a personal best in the 1000 freestyle (10:41.89) en route to a 32nd-place finish.

Best Times (SCY):

  • 200 Freestyle – 1:56.51
  • 500 Freestyle – 5:11.15
  • 1000 Freestyle – 10:41.89
  • 1650 Freestyle – 18:51.74

While her best event, the 1000 freestyle, often isn’t contested at the NCAA-level, Tornello’s speed in that indicates that she could put together strong performance in the 200, 500, and 1650 freestyle to contribute to Sacred Heart’s roster. Already, her best time in the 200 freestyle (1:56.51) would’ve ranked 2nd on the roster for the 2024-2025, adding Tornello’s potential as a relay swimmer. Similarly, Tornello’s personal best in the 500 freestyle would’ve ranked 3rd on the roster last season. While her best time in the 1650 freestyle would only rank Tornello 5th, she has only ever contested the event 3 times, with her most recent swim coming in 2024. Given that, it appears likely that she could see some large drops in the event contesting it on a more regular-basis.

Sacred Heart University is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), where they finished 4th overall last season. Rising junior Sophia Velleco led the team in the mid-distance events, picking up 2nd place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:49.81), 500 freestyle (4:52.89), and 200 butterfly (2:02.69).

In the fall, Tornello will be joined on Sacred Heart’s campus alongside fellow recruits Janie Gerbracht, Laura DeGennaro, Maddie Goret, Maggie Holland, Olivia Cieciwa, Ryleigh Mahoney, Sophie Tonello, and Jacklyn Zenner.
