Going into the meet, the Southern California Swimming Spring Age Group Championships already had several swimmers who already sported some of the fastest times nationally in their events.
During the meet, those swimmers went even faster and strengthened their status at or near the top of the national rankings in certain events.
One notable swimmer who turned in three personal bests was 14-year-old Gabi Brito of Beach Cities Swimming. Brito swam personal bests to win the 200 backstroke (1:55.57), 200 butterfly (1:57.53) and 400 individual medley (4:12.69).
Among 14-year-old girls,’ Brito has the fastest time in the 200 fly, the third-fastest in the 200 back and the fourth-fastest in the 400 IM. All-time in the girls’ 13-14 age group, those times rank her 27th in the 200 back, 19th in the 200 fly and 18th in the 400 IM.
She also has the second-fastest time in the 50 free, which she didn’t compete in individually at this meet.
Another swimmer thriving in the girls’ 13-14 age group who had three personal bests was 13-year-old Adalyn Lee of Brea Aquatics. Lee won the 50 free (24.18), 200 free (1:49.65) and 1650 free (16:46.31) all in personal best times, and she also won the 1000 free (9:58.71).
Lee has the fastest times this season among 13-year-old girls in the 1000 and 1650 free events, and the 4th-fastest time in the 200 free.
In the boys’ competition, 12-year-old Vincent Casciaro of Irvine Novaquatics won the 200 free (1:50.15), 500 free (4:51.03) and 200 IM (2:03.67), all in personal best times. He also swam a personal best time in the 100 IM (58.43) to finish second. In the boys’ 11-12 age group, he owns the third-fastest time in the 500 free, the fifth-fastest time in the 200 IM and the seventh-fastest in the 200 free this season.
The big team winner was Irvine Novaquatics, which swept the combined, girls’ and boys’ team titles.
Other notable individual performances were from:
- Coco Offenberg, a 12-year-old from South Orange County Aquatics, set personal best times in the girls’ 11-12 age group to win the 50 free (24.40), the 100 free (52.84), the 200 free (1:53.94) the 100 back (58.35) and the 100 fly (58.52). Among 12-year-old girls, Offenberg owns the second-fastest times in the 200 free and 200 back, the fourth-fastest time in the 50 free, the sixth-fastest time in the 100 free and the seventh-fastest time in the 100 fly this season.
- In the boys’ 13-14 age group, Matthew Lanskikh of Evolution Racing Club finished first in the 200 fly (1:54.65) and 400 IM (3:59.40), both in personal best times. He was second in the 500 free (personal best 4:33.91), 1000 free (personal best 9:24.82) and the 1650 free (16:12.71). Among 14-year-old boys, he has the seventh-fastest time in the 100 free, the 10th-fastest in the 400 IM and the 12th-fastest in the 500 free this season.
- Aaron Deng of Evolution Racing Club in the 13-14 age group won the 100 breast (57.75), the 200 breast (2:01.53) and the 200 IM (1:54.81), all in personal best times. He also was second in the 400 IM with a personal best time of 4:03.78. Among 14-year-old boys, Deng has the second-fastest time in the 200 breast this season.
- Sullivan Benes of Desert Storm Swimming won the 500 free (4:33.33) and 1000 free (personal best 9:24.78) in the 13-14 boys’ age group. He has the sixth-fastest time in the 1000 free and the ninth-fastest time in the 500 free among 14-year-old boys this season.
- Shaiel Pai of Irvine Novaquatics won two events in the 11-12 age group, taking the 50 breast (28.26) and 100 breast (1:01.17), both in personal best times. He also was second in the 100 fly (personal best time of 57.28). Among 12-year-old boys, he has the fastest time in the 100 breast and the second-fastest time in the 50 breast this season.
- Kingsly Du of Irvine Novaquatics, swam personal best times to win the 100 free (51.50) and 100 fly (56.88).
- In the girls’ 7-10 age group, Annabelle Hayes of Irvine Novaquatics won six events, taking the 200 free (2:05.04), 500 free (5:24.96) and 100 back (1:02.93) all in personal best times. She also won the 50 free (26.69), 100 free (57.80) and 50 back (30.44). Among girls 10 and under, Hayes has the fastest times in the 500 free and 100 back, the second-fastest time in the 100 free, the third-fastest time in the 50 free, the fourth-fastest time in the 50 back and the fifth-fastest time in the 200 free this season.
- Also in the girls’ 7-10 age group, Grace Wang of Irvine Novaquatics won the 50 fly (28.55), 100 fly (1:02.23) and 100 IM (1:04.88) and 200 IM (2:17.64) all in personal best times. Wang also swam personal best times in the 100 fly (57.15) and 200 fly (2:05.51) to finish second in each event. Among girls 10 and under, she has the fastest time in the 200 IM, the second-fastest times in the 100 fly and 100 back, the fourth-fastest time in the 100 IM and the fifth-fastest in the 50 fly this season.
- In the boys’ 7-10 age group, Oliver Li of Brea Aquatics won six events, finishing with personal best times to capture the 100 free (57.67), 200 free (2:06.69), 50 breast (33.38), 100 IM (1:06.17) and 200 IM (2:20.00). He also won the 100 breast (1:13.16). Among boys 10 and under, he has the third-fastest time in the 50 breast, the fourth-fastest time in the 100 breast and 200 IM, the sixth-fastest time in the 100 free and 100 IM, and the seventh-fastest time in 200 free this season.
- Hope Heumann of Irvine Novaquatics won the 50 breast (33.44) and 100 breast (1:13.76) in the 10-and-under age group. Among girls 10 and under she has the fastest time in the 50 breast and the second-fastest in the 100 breast this season.
