Augustana Dual-Athlete Bryn Greenwaldt Breaks NCAA D2 Record in 50 Free with 1st Sub-22

2025 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championship

Women’s 50 Yard Freestyle – Prelims

Top 8 Qualifiers:

  1. Bryn Greenwaldt, Augustana 21.92
  2. Kirabo Namutebi, Indy 22.27
  3. Luna Mertins, Lynn 22.31
  4. Kiara Pozvai, Henderson State 22.65
  5. Kristina Orban, Nova S’eastern 22.76
  6. Laura Dekoninck, Lynn 22.79
  7. TIE Maya Esparza, Nova S’eastern / Zsofia Kurdi, Nova S’eastern 22.88

Augustana junior Bryn Greenwaldt became the first woman in NCAA Division II history to break the 22-second barrier in the 50 free on Thursday, when she blasted a 21.92 in prelims to earn the top qualifying spot for tonight’s final.

Greenwaldt came to the wall .35 faster than the current division record-holder, Kirabo Namutebi from the University of Indianapolis, who broke the meet record with 22.08 in March 2024 and the overall division record with 22.03 at a double dual meet against Butler and Eastern Illinois in November 2024.

As a freshman at the 2023 NCAA Division II Championships, Greenwaldt clocked a 22.56 to place second behind Indy’s Johanna Buys who swam to a division and meet record of 22.10 in the final. In 2024, she was again runner-up with 22.49, this time to Namutebi as she lowered the D2 and meet marks to 22.08.

But this year, when she will be shuttling between the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships and the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships (fortunately, both are in Indianapolis), she is already half a second faster than she was a year ago.

Greenwaldt is also entered in the 100 back on Friday and the 100 free on Saturday. The latter conflicts with her entry in the high jump at the Track & Field meet, taking place on the same day about 5 miles north of the Natatorium at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The high jump is scheduled to begin at 3:55 Eastern Time, which puts it squarely in between prelims and finals of the swim meet. While she competed at the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the high jump, this is the first year she has competed in two winter sports concurrently, and the first time she has had to juggle national championships. She told SwimSwam, “I’m going to attempt to do both, but it might get a little choppy.”
