2025 BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Arizona State men absolutely shattered the Big-12 meet record in the 400 relay to cap off a dominant championship for them, going 2:44.03 to beat out Texas’ record of 2:47.59 from 2022 by three and half seconds. This was also a brand new conference record for the Sun Devils as well, breaking the previous record of 2:45.12 that Texas had held since 2019, after coming within 0.01 at the Eddie Reese Showdown in January.

Men’s 400 Free Relay

  • NCAA Record: 2:42.41 — Tennessee, 2025
  • Big 12 Record: 2:45.12 — Texas, 2019
  • Meet record: 2:47.59 — Texas, 2022
  • NCAA ‘A’ Cut: 2:49.79

Full Results:

  1. ASU- 2:44.03 **Conference and Meet Record**
  2. Arizona- 2:49.41
  3. BYU- 2:51.19
  4. TCU- 2:53.81
  5. Utah- 2:55.49
  6. Cincinnati- 2:55.67
  7. West Virginia- DQ

Arizona State featured three individual event champions on this relay, with junior transfer Tommy Palmer swimming the other leg.

The difference makers for the Sun Devils compared to the previous record were their middle two legs. Tommy Palmer was half a second faster than his previous split, which he had matched exactly from a flat start in going 42.00 to take fourth individually. Patrick Sammon also had a best ever split, breaking 41 for the first time to go 40.34. That stands as the #14 split all time, and could be big at NCAAs if ASU are get close to their own school record of 2:43.40 from 2024. Notably, if Ilya Kharun had swum his PB from January they would have finished in 2:43.34 and broken that record, even after losing Leon Marchand.

Jonny Kulow also had a top-25 split to bookend a successful night for him after breaking the meet record in the individual 100 earlier on Day 4, going 41.07 to come within a tenth of his own Big-12 record

Texas (2022 Big-12s) Texas (2019 NCAAs) ASU (2025 Eddie Reese Showdown) ASU (2025 Big-12s)

Do you have the .pdf results, as that is apparently the only place we can regularly see the RTs. I’d especially be interested in Sammon’s RT on his way to :40.34.

Well done to the ASU crew. Coach Herbie “The Bemster” has them looking great for the Big Meet. Can not wait to watch the meet BUT especially the relays which will be quick! TN, FLA, CAL, ASU, IU and TX will bring tapered teams to the fray!
