Mount St. Mary’s Women Win 20th Meet In A Row Against VMI; Keydet Men Top Mountaineers

Lexington, Va. (November 2, 2024) – Mount St. Mary’s swim and dive continued their dual-meet campaign with a split against the Virginia Military Institute on Saturday as the women won 171-110 with the men losing out 193-101 against the Keydets. With their win, the women secured their twentieth win in a row against VMI and retained their perfect 20-0 record which dates back to November 15, 2008.

Both the men’s and women’s 200-Yard Medley Relay teams continued their dominance from last weekend as the team of Hanna AggenChristina LazariTheodora Kanellopoulou, and Meghan Speicher captured first place with a time of 1:48.17 while the men’s team of Jason FitchAidan GradyParker Koenig, and Austin Toland placed first with a time of 1:32.98. Aggen and Fitch also placed first in their respective 100-Yard Backstroke races with times of 59.38 and 50.97 respectively.

Kanellopoulou continued her winning at the dual-meet with a time of 2:01.64 in the women’s 200-Yard Freestyle. Aidan Grady placed first in the men’s 100-Yard Breaststroke with a score of 56.72, two seconds in front of the nearest VMI swimmer. And Carmen Del Aguila placed first in the women’s 200-Yard Butterfly with a time of 2:09.55.

The Mountaineers continue their dual-meet schedule as they travel to Washington D.C. on November 16 to swim against Howard.

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Men’s Swimming & Diving tallied its first win after taking down Mount St. Mary’s Saturday afternoon at Goodall Pool.

The Keydets had 10 first-place winners en route to a 193-101 team victory over the Mountaineers.

Freshman Jack Mills dazzled again, breaking his own Rat and team records in the 200 butterfly with a first-place finishing time of 1:53.32. Mills also swam to first place in the 100 freestyle.

Also earning first-place marks for the Keydets was freshman Stephen Russell who won the 1,000 freestyle (9:56.88) and 500 freestyle (4:47.11). Freshman Sam Calder tallied first in the 200 freestyle (1:43.08) while sophomore Matthew Picard recorded a season-best time of 21.31 in the 50 freestyle for first place. Closing out the individual winner’s list was Ethan Griffith in the 200 IM (1:58.36).

VMI sealed the victory after the 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Picard, Calder, Mills, and Joshua Wolf swam to first with a mark of 3:07.18.

On the boards, Lane Jones stood above the rest in both the one- and three-meter dives, tallying 248.77 in the one-meter and 265.72 in the three-meter for new season highs. Sophomore Ryder Crealsenior Craig Swain, and freshman Zach Richardson each secured new season bests with their respective dives.

Between the men and women, there were 22 new program top 10 times. From the men, it was Russell (1,000 freestyle and 500 freestyle), Aubrey Struder (1,000 freestyle), Calder (200 freestyle and 100 freestyle), Toby Schwenk (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle), Wolf (100 backstroke and 200 backstroke), Caleb Wolf (200 butterfly and 500 freestyle), Mills (200 butterfly, 100 freestyle, and 100 butterfly), and Kayleb Eldridge (200 butterfly).

The Keydets will travel to Baltimore, Maryland for a tri-meet against UMBC and Saint Peter’s next Saturday.
