BOSTON, Mass. – After a three-week break, the Northeastern women’s swim and dive team (2-0) returned to Barletta Natatorium for its first home meet of the season, taking a 169-124 victory over the Rhode Island Rams (1-1) on Family & Friends Day Saturday afternoon.

  • Senior Erin Murphy picked up where she left off in Vermont, earning a win, and an NCAA Zone Cut, in the 3M Dive with a score of 289.95. Freshman Maddie Wong earned another second-place finish with a 267.08 score, and senior captain Isabelle Chambers took fourth with 247.35.
  • The Huskies followed up with a victory in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, as a team comprising of freshman Delaney Alonso, junior Elisabeth Bendall, sophomore May Bradburn, and graduate student Caroline Mahoney touched the wall at 1:45.09. Northeastern’s other two teams took the remaining podium places to sweep the event.
  • Graduate student Emily Gjertsen earned her second victory of the season in the 1000 Free, finishing a lap ahead of her competition and recording a time of 10:18.46. Sophomore Bella Busconi came in second with a mark of 10:40.77.
  • Northeastern continued to dominate, as senior captain Hannah Seward won the 200 Yard Free with a time of 1:54.14 before Alonso earned her second victory this season in the 100 Yard Back, touching the wall at 57:63. Bendall rounded out the stretch with a first-place finish in the 100 Yard Breast and a time of 1:06.58.
  • Back on the diving board, Murphy took another win, and an NCAA Zone Cut, in the 1M Dive after recording a score of 282.00. Chambers took third with a 251.18 score, and junior Jodi Au finished fourth with 248.63 in her first meet this season.
  • In the 10th event of the meet, Bradburn took victory in the 100 Yard Free with a recorded time of 52.45, followed by a win from junior Anna Verlander in the 200 Yard Back at 2:03.82.
  • Bradburn rounded out the first-place finishes with a win in the 100 Yard Butterfly, touching the wall at 56.05 to secure the 169-124 team win for the Huskies.

Northeastern women’s swim and dive team stay in action as they head down the road to take on MIT and Harvard in a dual meet at the Zesiger Center Pool on Friday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m.

How It Happened
Sophomore Julianna Tyler won two events and placed third in another to score 21 team points on her own for Rhode Island, but it was not enough as the Rams fell at Northeastern 169-124 Saturday afternoon.

After the host Huskies won the first six events of the meet, Tyler got Rhode Island (1-1) on track with a victory in the 200-yard butterfly. Her time of 2:06.50 was well ahead of the field, as Northeastern’s Kate Kerber was second with a time of 2:10.31.

Tyler added three points with a third-place finish in the 100 butterly. Then she came right back in the next event to win the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:11.43. She led a 1-2-3 finish for the Rams, as teammates Sarah Koenig (2:14.02) and Lily Gugino (2:14.82) took second and third, respectively.

Tyler also helped URI’s 200 medley relay team place third. She teamed with Erin TermanHannah Benavides and Abby Zadorozny to score two team points in the event.

Standouts from the Pool

  • Sophomore Avery Potyrala won the 50-yard freestyle for the second meet in a row with a time of 24.78 seconds.
  • Junior Rylee Kelly won the 500 freestyle to lead a 1-2-3 finish in the event. Kelly (5:11.13) who won by nearly six seconds ahead of the field, was followed by fellow Rams freshman Mary McCormick (5:17.09) and senior Emma Lee (5:20.44).
  • Kelly also placed second in the 200 freestyle.
  • Senior Hannah Benavides won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.30 and placed second in the 100 breaststroke, just getting outouched by Northeastern’s Elisabeth Bendall (1:06.58 to 1:06.78).

What’s Next
Rhode Island visits Northeastern for a head-to-head meet on Saturday, Oct. 19. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
