Sprint Queen Sarah Sjostrom Breaks Down 50/100 Free Olympic Sweep

Sarah Sjostrom dreamt of winning Olympic gold in the 100 free. Literally. She had a dream about herself winning a gold medal in the 100 free. Then did it.

Sjostrom, the world record holder in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, had achieved everything in the sport there is to achieve in both events outside of individual Olympic titles in both. Coming into the Paris Olympics, Sjostrom herself wasn’t even sure that she was going to swim the 100 free.

But once Paris kicked off, the Swedish sprint star ended up competing in both and it paid off for her as the world saw her crowned Olympic champion twice in her two signature events.

Sarah or Caeleb?

Sarah has Olympic gold medals in the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly. So does Caeleb. But Sarah has a few extra individual Olympic medals stretching out over multiple quads. She’s the all time greatest sprinter in my book.

Definitely Sarah, her dominance in the 50m fly makes her better in my book, as does the fact she has more individual World Records

First of all, Popov is the greatest sprinter of all time.

Between Sarah and Caeleb, however, it’s close.
Sarah has been much more consistent over a long period of time, but Caeleb was far more dominant between 2017 and 2021 than Sarah has ever been.
Dressel holds 4 Individual WR’s, Sarah holds 3.
In 2019, Sjostrom got 5 individual medals, but only 1 gold. Dressel got 4 individual medals, but all of them were gold.
In 2017, Sarah got 4 individual medals, 3 of which were gold. Dressel won 3 golds and no minor medals individually. (4th in 50 fly)
As OP pointed out, each of them has 1 individual Olympic Gold in each event.… Read more »

Eh, Sarah holds or has held WRs in 8 (?) individual distances, compared to Dressel’s 4. That alone to me counters your dominance argument, Sarah has set the WR in all of her primary distances, barring the 200FR LC and 500 fly SC (8/10), Dressel reset 4 (missing 3 others for 4/7), so that also argues for Sarah imo. Maybe we can ding Sarah for consistency or her ability to consistently deliver when it counts because I think she’s won less than her dominance over the record books and rankings would have suggested.

You can only really highlight Dressel’s dominance for 2019 and 2021, using 2017 as evidence of Dressel dominance compared to Sarah doesnt make sense when she… Read more »

Also, the 100 IM SCM is the least of a thing an event can possibly be (except for maybe the 100IM SCY).

Certainly not Dressel imo, and I dont think he’s #2 either. I’d rank Inge De Bruijn higher – 4 individual golds, including 50/100 free and 100 fly in one Olympics and held the WRs. Compared to Sarah, shorter time she was at her peak but she’s got 1 more gold than Sarah at the OGs – but also 9 fewer individual golds at worlds (which makes me think Sjostrom too).

Sjoestroem; she’s been at the top longer and was the 5th fastest women in the 200 free to boot.
