The 2nd day of the Sacramento Futures Championships saw Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics 16-year-old Kelsey Zhang ripped a new personal best of 4:48.82 en route to winning the women’s 400 IM by a considerable margin. Zhang’s previous best of 4:51.14 was set back in May at the PC SCSC George Haines International meet. Last night, Zhang swam a very balanced race, splitting 1:04.44 on fly, 1:16.99 on back, 1:22.56 on breast, and 1:04.83 on free. Canyons Aquatic Club 14-year-old Emma Hussein had a heck of a swim for 2nd as well, touching in 4:53.05. That performance blew away her personal best of 4:56.43, which the youngster had just set at the LA Invite about 3 weeks ago.
Cal Baptist’s Andrew Teh, competing for Socal Aquatics Association, won the men’s 100 back in 56.19, marking a big personal best for the 19-year-old. Teh entered the meet with a career mark of 57.71, which he swam in May of this year. He swam a very tightly split race last night, clocking a 27.76 on the opening 50m, then coming home in 28.43.
UCLA’s Sarah Bennetts, swimming for DART Swimming, won the women’s 100 free in 57.09. That was a very solid swim for Bennetts, coming in just off her personal best of 56.70, which she swam at the Sacramento Futures meet last summer. 46-year-old Gabrielle Rose had a very nice swim as well, taking 4th in 57.25.
Arizona’s Hayden Ghufran, another swimmer representing DART, took the men’s 100 free in 50.39. He holds a career best of 49.80, which he swam at the Canadian Trials back in May.
Princeton’s Arthur Balva won the men’s 400 IM in 4:25.59, touching 1st by 4 seconds exactly. He was well balanced across the strokes, splitting 57.60 on fly, 1:09.77 on back, 1:16.48 on breast, and 1:01.74 on free. That performance clipped his previous best of 4:26.38.
In the women’s 100 back, 15-year-old Ella Busquets out of Diablo Aquatics earned the win with a 1:03.23. With that swim, Busquets chipped 0.39 seconds off her previous best of 1:03.62, which she swam last summer at the Far Westerns Championships.
DART Swimming won the women’s 800 free relay, seeing Sarah Bennetts lead-off in 2:04.76, followed by Audrey Portello in 2:06.79, then Kylee Sears in 2:05.71, then Ava Portello in 2:03.08. They combined for an 8:20.34, winning the race by nearly 6 seconds.
In the men’s 800 free relay, Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics’ Arthur Balva (1:51.02), Shangxi Wang (1:54.94), Donovan Jeng (1:55.60), and Cole Ballard (1:52.44) teamed up to earn the win in 7:34.00.
