VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton swimming & diving teams sent their 21 seniors out in style, setting six pool records and sweeping Wagner in its annual Senior Day Meet on Saturday afternoon at the Saunders Aquatic Center. The Bearcat men defeated the Seahawks 203-92 while the women took a 192-105 decision.
Binghamton had nine women and 12 men honored before the meet during the program’s annual Senior Day ceremony. From there, the Bearcats posted four double winners in addition to their six pool records.
“It was a great meet,” head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. “This is a special group of seniors. It was the first group my staff and I recruited and we have seen them grow all the way through their careers. Today showed that we can do great things because we came off a tough week of training in Florida but still had a lot of fast swims.”
On the women’s side, junior Lauren Kuzma swept the 200 breast (2:17.25) as well as the 200 IM (2:09.71). Her 200 breast time smashed the previous pool record of 2:19.98, which was set by Anneli Johnson of St. Bonaventure back in 2006.
The other pool record on the women’s side was turned in by senior Courtney Moane, who broke her own record in the 100 breast. Her time of 1:03.71 edged her old mark of 1:03.88, which she set at the Green-White intra-squad meet back in October.
Other double winners on the women’s side included freshman Haley Nowak, who swept the 200 fly (2:09.63) and 100 fly (59.00), senior Maddie Hoover in the 200 free (1:53.29) and the 500 free (5:18.54) as well as freshman Ava Lee in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events (226.88 and 199.35 respectively).
Also winning an individual event on the women’s team was senior Skylar Ward in the 1000 free (10:44.14).
In the women’s 400 medley relay, Moane, Nowak, Hoover and sophomore Olivia Philbrick turned a first-place time of 3:53.49.
In the men’s meet, junior Elijah Lanfear played a role in three pool records. He won the 100 free with a time of 45.30, which broke the previous mark of 45.47, set by Chris Szelky of Army back in 2015.
Lanfear also joined seniors Eric Kroon, Mark Crocker and Henry Shemet to win the 400 medley with a time of 3:19.75. The previous mark of 3:20.64 was set by the Bearcats in 2022.
In the 200 free relay, Lanfear, sophomore Liam Preston as well as seniors Sandon Karinsky and Liam Murphy clocked a winning time of 1:23.38. The previous pool record of 1:23.66 was set by Binghamton three years ago.
Shemet, meanwhile, broke the pool record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.97. The previous record of 1:52.77 was established by Paige DaCosta of Cornell in 2022.
Kroon was the lone Binghamton men’s double winner, sweeping the 100 breast (56.59) and the 200 breast (2:05.49).
Other individual winners on the men’s side for the Bearcats included Murphy in the 200 free (1:40.49), senior Jake Vecchio in the 200 fly (1:51.38), freshman Cullin Cole in the 50 free (21.56), senior Will Maurer in the one-meter diving event (249.88) and freshman Dylan Norby in the three-meter diving competition (235.58).
