As voted on by his peers, UConn head coach Bob Goldberg has been elected the head of the AAC coaches group, making him the most vocal voice for swimming programs in the newly-former American Athletic Conference for the next two years.
He will work with SMU women’s head coach Steve Collins, who was elected as the conference’s vice-president.
Goldberg is entering his 25th season at the helm of the Huskies: a quarter-of-a-century where the Huskies have had absolutely incredible success in the classroom. The program has never had its team GPA fall below a 3.0 for either the men’s or the women’s programs: a truly impressive feat.
In the pool, UConn is coming off of a 4th place finish from their men’s team and a 7th-place finish from their women’s team, and should fight for conference titles in both genders in this new conference.
Their 2013-2014 campaign kicks off on October 12th with an Alumni meet, and then officially against Northeastern academic stalwarts Yale, Army, Villanova, and Penn in their pre-invite dual meet season. Villanova will be their first official meet of the AAC season.
A reminder of the teams in the 2013-2014 AAC, though remember that the conference will be changing soon:
2013-2014 Men’s AAC teams:
Cincinnati
UConn
East Carolina
SMU
Louisville
2013-2014 Women’s AAC teams:
Cincinnati
UConn
Houston
Louisville
Rutgers
SMU
And neither does Tulane. Both are still in the C-USA conference for this season according to their schedules.
East Carolina doesn’t join the conference until the 2013-2014 season.
