Singapore Continues Dominance On Penultimate Night Of SEA Games Action

2023 SOUTHEAST ASIAN (SEA) GAMES

The penultimate night of action in Cambodia saw Singapore continue to dominate the swimming events at the 2023 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

30-year-old Quah Ting Wen scored the victory for the nation in the women’s 50m free, touching in a winning time of 25.04. Her result shaved .02 off of the meet record, a time which stood at the 25.06 teammate Amanda Lim put on the books at the 2019 edition of the Games.

Lim was indeed in the field tonight, snagging silver in a mark of 25.16 while Thailand’s Jenjira Srisa-Ard rounded out the top 3 in a result of 25.32.

These same women all landed on the podium at the 2021 edition of the Games, which was postponed to 2022, only then it was Sris-Ard who topped the podium followed by Lim and then Quah.

The men’s 50m fly saw Singaporean swimmer Mikkel Jun Jie Jee get it done for gold, stopping the clock in a time of 23.45.

Mikkel’s result was enough to hold off his teammate Tzen Wei Teong who made it a 1-2 SGP finish in a silver medal-worthy 23.67. Filipino athlete Jarod Hatch also landed on the podium, bagging bronze in 23.89.

The men’s 200m back this evening was a tight race all the way to the wall, with the top 3 performers separated by less than half a second.

Thailand’s Tonnam Kantee Mool was the man there first, capturing gold in a time of 2:01.29. That performance garnered the 17-year-old a new national record in the event, hacking over a second off of the old Thai standard of 2:02.38 Ratthawit Thammanantachot logged last February.

Runner-up status in this men’s 2back went to 19-year-old Vietnamese athlete Tran Hung Nguyen who touched in 2:01.34 for his 3rd individual medal of these Games. Nguyen was the 200m IM and 400m IM double winner here in Cambodia.

Bronze went to Malaysia’s Hoe Yean Khiew who got to the wall in 2:01.74. He owns the national record with the 2:00.80 registered at the 2021 Malaysian Open Championships.

Singapore closed out the night with double victories in the women’s 4x200m free and men’s 4x100m free relays. In the former, the national touched in 8:12.80 while in the latter their squad grabbed gold in 3:17.35.

The quickest split on the women’s side was marked by Gan Ching Hwee‘s 2:01.81 lead-off while the men’s quickest leg was represented by Quah Zeng Wen‘s 48.46 anchor. Lead-off Jonathan Tan was also under 49 seconds in a 48.90 lead-off.

Additional Winners

  • Letitia Sim secured her 3rd individual victory of these Games, taking the women’s 200m breast in a time of 2:28.49. The 19-year-old University of Michigan swimmer earned the sole time of the field under the 2:30 barrier, with this win added to her earlier golds in the 100m breast and 200m IM. Sim also has a silver to her credit here from the 50m breast.
  • The men’s 200m breast saw Vietnam’s Thanh Bao Pham get it done for gold, with the 21-year-old producing a winning effort of 2:11.45. This represents a new national record, erasing his own previous personal best of 2:12.09 from when he took silver at last year’s Games.
