Spaniard Carlos Garach led a tightly-punched group of swimmers down the final stretch of the men’s 10km event on the opening day of U.S. Open Water Nationals in Sarasota, securing the victory in a tight battle with American Brennan Gravley.
Garach finished in a time of 1:51:05.65, a mere 13 one-hundredths ahead of Gravley (1:51:05.78).

Garach, 18, won the men’s 800 and 1500 free at the 2022 World Junior Championships and recently qualified for the 2023 World Championships in the pool, clocking times of 3:49.33 in the 400 free, 7:52.24 in the 800 free and 14:57.23 in the 1500 free at the Spanish Championships three weeks ago.
As the top American finisher, Brennan Gravley, who represents the University of Florida, earns a spot on the U.S. team at the 2023 World Championships in both the 5km and 10km events.
The winner of both the men’s and women’s 10km events automatically earn a spot on the U.S. team at Worlds this summer, with Katie Grimes having earned her spot after winning the women’s event earlier in the day.
Gravley finished tied for 10th in the 5km and 12th in the 10km last year in Budapest.
His brother, Sun Devil Swimming’s Dylan Gravley, who placed 13th in the 10km at Worlds last year, finished third overall and second amongst Americans, while University of Tennessee’s Joey Tepper was fourth.
