The Falcons of the University of Texas at the Permian Basin (UTPB) have hired former swimmer Cameron Kainer as the new head coach of their Division II men’s and women’s swimming programs. He takes over from Rob Rankin, who took the head coaching job at Permian High School this summer.
Kainer was a two-year captain for the Falcons and a distance swimmer who graduated in 2010, and at 24 years old making him one of the youngest NCAA head coaches in the country
Kainer comes after one year as an assistant at Division II Florida Tech, where he was described by his then head coach Jeni Ritter as having very “positive energy”. Prior to that, he was a graduate assistant for two years at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, when the team broke 11 school records.
He has also had several summer jobs of notable succes. This past summer, he served as a counselor at the University of Texas swim camp alongside names like Eddie Reese, Kris Kubik, Carol Capitani, and Roric Fink.
The summer before he was the head coach and aquatic director of the Northwood Club; this is just a summer league team, but in one year, he double the team’s membership.
Kainer was a former Rankin swimmer, which should help contribute to the transition.
The UTPB women were 6th (out of 7) at last year’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, and the men’s team was 5th (out of 6) at the same meet.
I had the chance to spend some time on deck with Cameron last week, I was very impressed! Having coached a few of the swimmers on UTPB’s roster, I think it was a great hire.
