2022 SEC SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Georgia’s Luca Urlando is having a nice start to the 4th day of SEC Championships, swimming a personal best, an SEC meet record, and a No. 9 all-time performer with his 1:39.00 200 fly.

Urlando won the event, marking his 3rd win out of the 3 individual events he’s competed in–including a lifetime best and No. 9 100 fly performance. The sophomore already has the school record in the 200 fly, and was able to defend his SEC title–he won the 200 fly last season in 1:40.93. He’s been otherwise quick this meet, ranking among the top-five ever for a 50 fly with a relay start with a 19.57.

Urlando defeats Hugo Morris’ meet record of 1:40.59. The current conference record is held by Shaine Casas, who swam a 1:38.69 in 2021.

Casas’ SEC Record (2021) Urlando’s Meet Record (2022) Morris’ Previous Meet Record (2016)
21.46 21.76 22.71
24.81 24.75 25.63
25.86 25.63 26.00
26.56 26.86 26.25
Total: 1:38.69 Total: 1:39.00 Total: 1:40.59

Urlando’s previous personal best was 1:39.75, set at NCAAs last season. He placed 4th at that meet, but his time today would’ve moved him onto the podium in 3rd. Nicolas Albiero won the event in 138.64.

Urlando is now the 10th-fastest performer in the event, just behind Zheng Quah’s 2017 1:38.83. For a brief few minutes, Urlando was the fastest in the NCAA, but Louisville’s Albiero took the spot in the event when he swam a 1:37.92 at ACC Championships. The two currently have the 1st- and 2nd-fastest times in the NCAA.

“ 50 free relay start with a 19.57”. I don’t think Luca was swimming free.
