Swimming Australia’s Trials Meet Moves To May, Acts As Sole Qualification

We heard from the Japanese Swimming Federation (JASF) in terms of the changes to their selection policy in light of the 2022 FINA World Championships now taking place in Budapest. Then today Swimming Australia also revealed its alterations with their qualification process.

First up on the Aussie changes, the 2022 Australian Swimming Championships are set to move from their original month of April to now take place from May 17th to May 22nd. They will still take place at the South Australian Aquatic & Leisure Centre in Adelaide.

Previously, Australia had a divided selection process between two meets, one before the World Championships, then scheduled for May, and one between Worlds and the Commonwealth Games. Now, a single meet will select teams for the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and World University Games.

Australian Dolphins Head Coach, Rohan Taylor, believes the move to May will bring out the best in the athletes.

“There will be genuine selection opportunities for three different teams at this meet and I have no doubt our athletes will be pushing each other to produce their best with plenty to swim for.

“We are always looking for opportunities to get our athletes in the pool competing and such a high-quality Australian Championships will be the perfect preparation in the lead up to these major international meets.”

“It’s fantastic to have the support of our partners to be flexible in moving this event, particularly the South Australian Tourism Company, SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre and Amazon Prime Video, and I genuinely believe it will produce as strong a competition as we could have asked for.”

Per the lucrative agreement, the 2022 Australian Swimming Championships will be streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in Australia.

So going by photos posted on IG Kaylee attended the IM national camp instead of the backstroke one so hopefully we’ll see her doing IM internationally this year.

I think sometimes they spread people out if some groups have too many people. Brianna Throssell was in the fly one presumably because the 100/200 freestyle one was packed because you’d have to say her 200 free is better than her fly.

Can we also get a report on Kaylee moving to Griffith with coach Michel Bohl? I thought she was planning to stay on Sunny Coast? Did that not work out? Why move to the GC and not link back up with Chris Mooney? Money’s training obviously works for her.

Maybe that has something to do with her sister or B Smith. #gossip

Good move, everyone knows where they stand now, instead of the one-off hybrid selection system for 2022. The calendar is now clearer for everyone.

What’s the third team? Worlds, Comm Games and ???. I wonder if this will impact the whole thing about Worlds and Comm Games? Or impact athletes decisions about whether to skip worlds. Titmus has been clearly planning to skip for a long time, but none of the other swimmers seemed committed to skipping and it was just rumours from what I remember.

Sad that there basically won’t be any high level meets for Aussies until May. But the decision makes sense.

Junior Worlds is probably the third team and it wasn’t rumours, the source for the first article that reported it was Rohan Taylor.

probably WUGs. the April championships in 2019 were used to select that team, and national age has always been the selection meet for junior teams

Watched them in 2001- some athletics and swimming. Loved them! Geoff Huegill and Michael Klim and Giann Rooney etc in their prime.

Now that the Cold War tensions between US and Russia are back due to Ukraine maybe it’s a good time to do so lol
