Lakeside Aquatic Butterflyer Sophia Buhr Commits to Colorado School of Mines

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Sophia Buhr from Highland Village, Texas has committed to swim at Colorado School of Mines in the class of 2025.

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and swimming careers at Colorado School of Mines!! It is an honor to be welcomed into such a kind and energetic team. This wouldn’t be possible without the endless support of my family, friends, coaches, and teammates!”

Buhr, who is graduating from Founders Classical Academy, swims with Lakeside Aquatic Club. She focuses mainly on fly, back, and IM. Buhr kicked off her 2021 long course season with BPs in the 100 breast and 200 breast at Lakeside’s LC Season Opener in April, and in the 100 fly (1:05.93) and 200 free at the MAC North Texas Senior Meet in May.

She logged a PB in the SCY 100 fly in March at the Lone Star State Invitational but most of her best times in the short course pool come from College Station Sectionals in February 2020. There, she improved in five of her six events, including the 100/200 back, 200/400 IM, and 200 fly. Last December, she won the 200 fly at the LAC Jingle Bell Invite.

Top SCY times:

  • 100 fly – 58.42
  • 200 fly – 2:07.37
  • 200 IM – 2:10.48
  • 400 IM – 4:38.72
  • 100 back – 1:00.96
  • 200 back – 2:10.83
  • 100 free – 55.23
  • 200 free – 1:58.07

Mines came in second place in both the women’s and men’s meets at the 2021 RMAC Swimming & Diving Championship. Buhr’s best times would have scored for the Ore Diggers in the A finals of the 100 fly, 200 fly and 400 IM and the B finals of the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM. She will overlap two years with 200 fly conference champion Erin Taggart, and three years with freshmen standout butterflyers Annie Osmun, Lauren Mayo, and Jules Hays.

Never knew that Colorado school of the mines had a team. Colorado use to be a big mine state. There is still some mining on the western side of the state.

Despite having a name that makes it sound like it must be super small and specialized, it’s actually a pretty good sized D2 school with really a good engineering program and not just mining and petroleum though those are what it’s still best known for. Sophia’s going to get a great education, congrats!
