Bar Soloveychik knocked down his second Israeli national record in nearly as many days, with the 20-year-old crushing a lifetime best in the men’s 800m free.
While competing on the final night of action at the 2021 Union Cup, Soloveychik stopped the clock at a quick time of 7:59.40, with the future University of Minnesota Gopher getting under the 8:00 mark for the first time in his career. Entering this meet, Soloveychik’s career-quickest was represented by the 8:01.83 put up last December to take the Israel Winter Olympic Trials title.
With this swim, Soloveychik became just the second man from his nation ever to get under the 8:00 threshold, overtaking the previous Israeli standard of 7:59.70 Gil Kiesler put on the books in 2017. Although Soloveychik’s time, for now, missed the 7:54.31 FINA ‘A’ cut needed to qualify for the postponed Olympic Games it was quick enough to notch his name onto Israel’s roster for the European Championships.
Soloveychik had already notched the 400m free national record here at the Wingate Institute, posting an effort of 3:49.77 to reap gold.

- Aviv Barzelay put up Israel’s second-fastest women’s 200m backstroke performance in history, registering a winning effort of 2:12.01. That fell just .10 shy of the national standard of 2:11.91 she set herself at the FINA World Junior Championships.
