Annika McEnroe Winds Up for Fast Meet on Day 1 of South Carolina Sr States

The South Carolina Swimming LSC is hosting its annual Senior State Championships this weekend in Spartanburg. As we approach the traditional LSC championship season, this is among the first LSC championship meets we’ve seen since they began to be canceled en masse last March.

The defending state champions, and meet hosts, from Y-Spartaquatics kicked off this year’s title defense with a bang on Thursday, winning the opening girls’ 200 medley relay in a dominant 1:43.83. That put them two-and-a-half seconds ahead of the runners-up.

The winning relay included Sophia Kannee (27.39), Delaney Franklin (30.12), Annika McEnroe (23.60), and Kirsti McEnroe (22.72). For the older McEnroe sister, 18-year old Cal commit Annika, that split is a quarter-of-a-second better than she swam at the high school state championship meet in October, where almost the same relay (except with Caroline Byers on the breaststroke leg) won the state title.

Given that she swam best times in both the 100 fly (53.0) and 200 IM (1:59.2) at that meet, this sets her up for a big weekend of racing in her home pool.

Spartaquatics bookeneded the session with another dominant relay victory, this time in the 800. There the group of Annika McEnroe (1:52.23), Kirsti McEnroe (1:50.87), Gardner Viney (1:56.02), and Camrynn Wilson (1:54.96) combined for a time of 7:34.08 – more than 6 seconds faster than Team Greenville’s runner-up relay.

Other Day 1 Winners:

• Sterling Burd of Hilton Head Aquatics won the girls’ 1000 yard free in 10:11.95, which is a best time by more than 4 seconds. Burd’s best event, the 200 fly, is still to come at the meet.
• Team Greenville’s Silas Crosby cruised to a win in the boys’ 1000 free by more than 15 seconds, though he was still almost 11 seconds slower than his best time. The big drop at the top of this race came from 3rd-place finisher Will Humphreys of the Palmetto Swim Club – he improved his time by more than 21 seconds to go 9:48.35.
• Crosby’s Team Grenville teammates won the boys’ 200 medley relay in 1:33.99. With 4 different relay legs than they used at this meet last year, the team was almost 2 seconds better for the win.
• Like their Y-Spartaquatics colleagues on the girls’ side, the Team Greenville boys swept the day’s relays by winning the 800 free in 6:59.10. The best legs were a 1:44.64 leadoff from Jeffrey Stachelek and a 1:43.20 anchor from Silas.
