CHICAGO – A memorable Senior Day for the University of Chicago swimming & diving teams concluded with a historic dual meet victory over University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon.
Before the start of the meet, the Maroons recognized their 16 seniors for their contributions to the program – Nicole Garcia, Sydney Grube, Sedef Ishaque, Iris Jacobs, Agnes Lo, Yifan Mao, Audrey Mason, Michaela Mullison, Tina Rodriguez, Taye Baldinazzo, Anton Generalov, Byrne Litschgi, Aidan Meara, George Reuter, Scott Wu and Reona Yamaguchi.
For the first time ever, the UChicago men and women defeated NCAA Division I opponent Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the same meet. It also marked the first time the women have topped the Panthers as well. The men’s team score stood at 200-100 and the women’s score was 190.5-107.5.
Three school records fell on the day. Yamaguchi broke his own pool and school record in the 100-yard IM by finishing in 51.67. The women’s 100-yard IM school record was also set by first-year Chanell Kann in a time of 59.42. First-year Andrew Chen posted a new record in the men’s one-meter dive (six dives) by scoring 330.15 points.
All told, the Maroons triumphed in 26 out of 32 events (14 men and 12 women). On the women’s side, there were three individual multi-winners. Kann was first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.02), 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.15) and 100-yard IM. Sophomore Chloe Fong was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle (53.87) and 200-yard freestyle (1:57.44). Junior Hadley Ackerman swept the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly with times of 58.87 and 2:07.79, respectively.
UChicago’s men featured three multi-champions as well. Yamaguchi touched first in three different races – 100-yard IM, 100-yard breaststroke (58.28) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.48). Baldinazzo won the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.87) and 500-yard freestyle (4:41.51). Litschgi earned a pair of wins in the 100-yard backstroke (50.73) and 200-yard backstroke (1:51.38).

CHICAGO, Ill. – Jared Kleczka of the Milwaukee men’s swimming and diving team had a big day from the boards in a dual against the University of Chicago on Saturday, Jan. 18, in Chicago, Ill. But the Panthers fell to the Maroon, 200-100.
The freshman standout diver dove to a first-place finish on the three-meter with a personal record score of 338.03, which is now the third-best score in program history. Kleczka also finished third on the one-meter with another personal record score of 313.20. This score also cracked the Panther All-Time Top-10 list at No. 5.
From the pool, Jack Garcia led the field in the 1000 free in a personal record time of 9:52.34 to finish in first-place. Teammate Dane Van Allen finished shortly behind for second place also in a personal record time of 9:53.23 while Andrew Grever made the clean sweep as he finished in third in 10:05.07.
The 200 medley relay team of Ben Huynh, Jacob Fase, Patrick Kelley and Bailey Bodart swam to a time of 1:35.39 to finish third overall.
Patrick Kelley swam to two second-place finishes in both the 200 and 100 fly. Kelley grabbed a time of 1:53.94 in the 200 and a personal record time of 50.69 in the 100. He also finished fourth in the 100 IM in 52.88.
The distance squad also showed up strong as they claimed third through seventh place in the 500 free. Van Allen (4:46.14) swam to third place, Grever (4:46.15) finished fourth, Garcia (4:48.99) claimed fifth, Colin Duffy (4:51.32) took sixth, and Danny Larson (4:57.97) finished seventh.
In a tight 200 free race, Mason Schoof (1:43.36), Danny Larson (1:43.70), and Jonathan Kollen (1:44.70) finished one after the other to take third, fourth, and fifth place respectively.
Ben Huyhn grabbed a top-three finish in the 100 back with a time of 52.96 while teammate Tyler Wrasman touched the wall next in 53.03 for fourth.
Brandon Niemiec led the Panthers in the 100 breast to a second-place finish in 58.46
In the sprints, Ryan Hakes (21.75), Jasper Appleton (21.77), and Bailey Bodart (21.78) placed third, fourth and fifth respectively in a tight-packed race.
Hakes also led the Panthers in the 100 free in 47.59 to a fourth-place finish.
Jacob Fase just missed the top spot in the 200 breast, touching the wall less than half a second behind first place (2:09.88).
Closing out the night of racing, the 400 free relay team of Larson, Hakes, Appleton, and Bodart finished second with a time of 3:08.42.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Milwaukee women’s swimming and diving team came up short in a dual against the University of Chicago on Saturday, Jan. 18, in Chicago, Ill.
The Maroon outscored the Panthers, 190.5-107.5, but MKE still leads the all-time series 10-1.
From the boards, McKenzie Sanchez came up big and dove to a first-place finish on the three-meter with a huge personal record score of 294.30 and a second-place finish on the one-meter also with a personal record score of 288.72.
In the pool, the 200 medley relay team of Molly Meland, Bri Zablocki, Bella Passamani and Kelen McDaniels touched the wall in second place with a time of 1:49.08.
Molly Meland grabbed an event win in the 100 back in 58.44 while claiming second in the 100 fly with a time of 58.08.
For the fifth time this season, Kelen McDaniels sprinted to a first-place finish in the 50 free in 24.73 while teammate Cassandra Hutchins claimed third in 25.09.
McDaniels also swam to a second-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 54.04.
Giulia Guerra-Montes picked up another event win for the Panthers in the 200 back after touching the wall first in 2:06.56. Teammate Riley Melendy was next to finish for second place in 2:08.57.
Guerra-Montes also swam to a second-place finish in the 1000 free in a personal record time of 10:45.59. Teammate Madeline Worgull finished shortly behind in 10:53.96 to finish fourth.
In a fun 500 free race, Bella Passamani tied for first place with a time of 5:15.19.
Sydney Dahl led the Panthers in the 200 free with a third-place finish in 1:59.51 while Angela Kordik also tabbed a third-place finish in the 100 breast.
Bri Zablocki (2:12.07), Brianna Homontowski (2:14.42) and Bella Passamani (2:15.21) finished back-to-back-to-back in the 200 fly to finish third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
Zablocki had another top-three finish in the 100 IM with a time of 1:02.11 while Melendy touched the wall shortly after in 1:02.50 to take fourth.
The 400 free relay team of Natalie Hey, McDaniels, Hutchins, and Passamnai finished in second place with a time of 3:38.71 to close out the night.
