CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes swimming & diving team won its first dual meet of the spring Saturday afternoon, capturing a 159-140 win over Boston College at the Whitten University Center Pool.
With the Hurricanes missing several key contributors due to injury, a well-balanced performance both on the boards and in the lanes propelled Miami to victory.
After a December training trip to Puerto Rico, head swimming coach Andy Kershaw said he was looking forward to seeing his team’s mindset transition from ‘practice’ to ‘the game’ Saturday – and his team delivered on those expectations.
“That’s the best I’ve seen them at ‘the game,’ and that was gratifying,” Kershaw said. “Sometimes the pressure they feel, I think, takes a little bit away from that, and I was happy to see they reconnected with ‘the game.’ They’ve done the work – today they went out and enjoyed the results.”
The Hurricanes received a boost from a diving contingent that swept the 1-meter and 3-meter. Alicia Blagg earned the top finish in the 1-meter (317.63) ahead of Millie Haffety (310.95) and Mia Vallee (310.20), while Vallee (312.00) won the 3-meter ahead of Jessie Creed (307.80) and Haffety (286.80).
Five different swimmers won events for the Hurricanes in the lanes, including junior Carmen San Nicolas (200-yard freestyle, 1:52.22), freshman Andrea Todorovic (100-yard backstroke, 57.56) and freshman Isabel Traba (200-yard butterfly, 2:02.53).
Sophomore Zorry Mason won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.20), the 100-yard butterfly (55.09) and the 200-yard IM (2:04:28).
“We had to have that. We only had 13 people out there. We had to have those contributions,” Kershaw said. “Zorry, every time she dives in, she gets to the first wall and is way ahead. Even though we’re used to seeing it, it certainly can’t be taken for granted.”
One of the most impressive performances of the day came in the 200-yard butterfly, where Traba finished ahead of second-place finisher Una Forsythe (2:06.71) and third-place finisher Chandler Sensibaugh (2:07.56).
“We’ve had some alums here who were part of a group we called ‘U Fly’ – they took a lot of ownership and we’ve been building that back,” Kershaw said. “To go 1-2-3 in the 200 fly was great, with some great swims.”
Forsythe, who Kershaw said enjoyed a “really good” meet, also posted a career-best time in the 100-yard freestyle.
Miami added an exclamation point to the meet with a top time in the 400-yard medley relay. San Nicolas, Traba and junior Sydney Knapp were joined for the first time this season by Manon Viguier, and the Hurricanes’ top entry delivered a finish of 3:26.58.
“Manon is not going to show up on the highlight reel necessarily, but this was her first meet back. It’s been a 10-month injury process, just having her back and having her in that relay was really great to see,” he said. “The 100 free is an event we’re strong at. I was just happy to see those people execute a good 100 free. We work on it a lot, and it was exciting to see the execution of the group of eight people we had competing at the end there.”
The Hurricanes continue their spring schedule on Jan. 18 with a home meet against FGCU. The Senior Day action is set to begin at noon from the Whitten University Pool.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Harvard men’s swimming and diving returned to action for the first time in 2020 on Saturday and defeated Boston College at the University of Miami, 159-109. With the swimming-only dual-meet victory, the Crimson improved to 4-2 on the season.
Harvard dominated the day, winning 11 of 14 events, and was led by three-time victors Will Grant, Umitcan Gures and Michael Zarian. The trio won a pair of individual events and swam on the triumphant 200-yard medley relay (1:29.97).
Grant, a first-year from Waco, Texas, captured the 100 breast title with a time of 57.76 and the 200 back, clocking in at 1:46.44. Gures was victorious in the 200 free (1:41.12) and the 100 fly (49.10), while Zarian took first in the 100 back (49.74) and 500 free (4:30.87).
Harvard Highlights
– Simon Lamar won the 1,000 free, finishing in 9:33.09. The sophomore led a group of Crimson swimmers that came in first, third (Zach Snyder) and fourth place (Marcus Holmquist).
– Noah Brune and Eric Whisenant claimed the first two spots in the 200 fly, finishing in 1:51.17 and 1:54.84, respectively.
– Mahlon Reihman finished ahead of the 10-swimmer pack in the 100 free, registering a time of 45.14, more than a half-second faster than the runner-up.
– Jared Simpson recorded a 200 breast time of 2:04.84 to come in first place ahead of second-place performer David Abrahams (2:07.61).

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Boston College swim and dive teams opened up the 2020 calendar year on Saturday as the men’s team faced Harvard and the women took on Miami. The Eagles are back in action on Jan. 14, hosting Tufts at the Margot Connell Recreation Center.
MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS – vs. Harvard
- The relay team of Colin O’Leary, Sami Fares, Matt Clark and Sam Roche placed third in the 200 yard medley relay, finishing in 1:33.25. Jon Farah, Peter Shepanzyk, Damion Geoghegan Ribeiro and Michael Hinton followed closely behind, placing fourth in 1:35.25.
- Zachary Szmania placed second in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 9:34.15. He also placed fourth in the 500 yard freestyle with a 4:42.09 finish.
- Clark placed second in the 200 yard freestyle, finishing in 1:41.88. The freshman also finished second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 45.73.
- Fares placed second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a 57.79 finish.
- Cole Gvozdas earned a third-place finish in the 200 yard butterfly with a 1:56.31 time.
- Hinton (21.29) and Geoghegan Ribeiro (21.32) placed first and second, respectively, in the 50 yard freestyle.
- O’Leary earned the second spot in the 200 yard backstroke, finishing in 1:54.74.
- Shepanzyk (2:07.80), Ryan Price (2:11.74) and Aleksej Cupic (2:19.82) placed third through fifth in the 200 yard breaststroke.
- Roche earned the fourth place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a 51.79 time.
- Matt Szekely (1:57.02), Lucas Saliba (1:59.35) and Farah (2:01.12) swept the top three finishes in the 200 yard individual medley.
- The Eagles’ relay teams took the top two in the 400 yard freestyle relay: Hinton, Roche, Zander Santana and Max Threlkeld placed first (3:07.60) while Evan O’Mara, Kevin Chandra, Griffin Taylor and Cupic placed second (3:14.02).
WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS – vs. Miami
- Maura Grimes, Taylor Covington, Victoria Lin and Haley Dolan placed first in the 200 yard medley relay with a 1:44.82 finish. Nicole Barkemeyer, Anna Milia, Mary Kate Gannon and Sofia Zinis (1:47.61) placed third in the same event.
- Linsdey Ryalls placed first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a 10:32.68 performance. Sophia Miller (10:42.78) and Alexa Lantin (10:49.06) placed third and fourth, respectively.
- Ali Kea (1:54.21), Kristina Fecarotta (1:54.65), and Ashleigh Scott (1:54.76) placed third through fifth in the 200 yard freestyle.
- Grimes (57.60), Barkemeyer (58.80) and McGeary (59.25) placed second through fourth in the 100 yard backstroke.
- Covington (1:06.55), Julia Donahue (1:07.81) and Milia (1:07.98) placed second through fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke.
- Dolan (23.55), Kea (23.80) and Zinis (24.05) swept the top three finishes in the 50 yard freestyle.
- Kea (52.23), Scott (52.33) and Lauren Quinn (52.33) placed third through fifth in the 100 yard freestyle.
- Barkemeyer (2:06.48), McGeary (2:07.68) and Grimes (2:08.66) swept the top three finishes in the 200 yard backstroke.
- Lantin (2:21.33) finished first in the 200 yard breaststroke while Covington placed second (2:26.25).
- Ryalls (5:11.07), Fecarotta (5:11.69) and Miller (5:12.14) finished second through fourth in the 500 yard freestyle.
- Gannon (57.44) and Lin (57.47) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 yard butterfly.
- Lantin (2:10.19) and Donahue (2:11.26) placed second and third in the 200 yard individual medley.
- The team of Scott, Dolan, Quinn and Aileen Coyne earned the second-place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a 3:29.92 finish while Zinis, Kea, Barkemeyer and Ryalls placed third with a 3:32.50 finish.
