Akron’s Mackenzie Vargas won the women’s 200 fly on day 3 of the Geneva Futures meet at the SPIRE Institute. Vargas took the event in 2:15.93, winning by nearly a second, but finishing off her personal best of 2:14.72 from earlier this year. Navy’s Ethan Tack took the men’s 200 fly by nearly 2 seconds, posting a 2:03.24. That marked a huge time drop for Tack, who came into the meet with a personal best of 2:05.71.
Duke’s Quinn Scannell posted a 26.24 to win the women’s 50 free, taking half a second off her personal best of 26.77. West Virginia’s Sam Neaveill won the men’s 50 free in 23.47, narrowly beating out Alec Lawless, who finished in 23.55. Neaveill has a personal best od 23.37 from 2017.
Angela Gambardella, a 17-year-old out of SoCo Aquatic Club, won the women’s 200 breast in 2:36.25. Gambardella touched the wall over 2 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, and took nearly 4 seconds off her personal best of 2:40.19. WVU’s Jack Portmann won the men’s 200 breast, clocking a 2:21.73. That time comes in off Portmann’s personal best of 2:20.98 from 2016, but was a season best by about 3 seconds.
Victoria Buerger (Allegheny North Swim Club), 17, dropped over a second to win the women’s 100 back. Buerger came into the meet with a personal best of 1:04.09, which she had swum in June of this year, then clocked a 1:03.22 in prelims, and 1:02.97 in finals. WVU’s Trayton Saladin won the men’s 100 back convincingly with a new best time of 56.68. Saladin dropped over a second from his personal best of 57.69.
16-Year-Old Ella Dyjak (Connecticut Aquatic Club) and 19-year-old Brooke Travis (Nation’s Capital) battled it out in the women’s 400 free, finishing in 4:21.53 and 4:21.58 respectively. Travis got out to the early lead, turning at the 100 mark in 1:02.88 to Dyjak’s 1:03.11, and flipping at the 200 in 2:09.12 to Dyjak’s 2:09.90. Dyjak bit into Travis’ lead slightly on the 3rd 100, splitting 1:06.85 to Travis’ 1:07.13. Dyjak then wore the rest of Travis’ lead down on the last 100, splitting 1:04.78 to Travis’ 1:05.33, and getting her hand on the wall .05 seconds before Travis. Yale’s Liam Bogart won the men’s 400 free in 4:01.28, besting his personal mark of 4:03.97.
