Cary, North Carolina’s Rebecca Ssengonzi has announced her decision to swim for Johns Hopkins University beginning in the 2018-19 season.

Ssengonzi will be the second of four siblings to swim collegiately; her older brother Jethro Ssengonzi is a sophomore on the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s men’s swimming and diving team. Ssengonzi is a senior at Cary’s Green Hope High School. She placed 8th in the 100 fly (57.55) and 12th in the 200 IM (2:08.97) at the 2017 NCHSAA 4A State Championships in February. She also contributed to Green Hope’s fifth-place 200 free relay (25.06) and sixth-place 200 medley relay (25.38 butterfly leg).
Swimming year-round for Marlins of Raleigh, Ssengonzi had a strong junior season. From the October 2016 through August 2017, she improved her times in the SCY 500/1000/1650 free, 200 breast, 50/100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM, and the LCM 400 free, 200 back, 100/200 breast, 200 fly, and 200/400 IM.
Ssengonzi competed at NCSA Spring Championship in the 100 breast, 50/100/200 fly, and 200 IM. Her top SCY times include:
- 50 fly – 25.76
- 100 fly – 56.05
- 200 fly – 2:04.91
- 200 IM – 2:08.07
- 400 IM – 4:33.55
