British Swimming has announced that Daniel Fogg has been selected as their representative for the Olympics in the Open Water 10km swim, which will add that to his 1500 earned earlier in the spring at Britain’s Olympic Trials.
Though he seemingly earned his spot by finishing 35th at the 10km open water qualifier in Setubal, Portugal two weeks ago, there was still some question as to whether he or David Davies would earn the spot, on the basis that Davies was the silver medalist at the 2008 Olympics.
“I’ll now sit down with my coach to look at the strategy for the open water event too which is a week after the pool swim. It’s fantastic to get to race in both events,” Fogg said of his appointment.
He also finished 16th in the 10km marathon swim at the World Championships in Shanghai last year, so the performance in Setubal was not indicative of his potential in this race.
British Swimming failed to commit to one over the other until this week, when they made Fogg their man. He will join a list of swimmers that includes Ous Mellouli and Spain’s Erika Villaecija-Garcia as double pool-open water swimmers at the Olympics.
Davies still has his next set of Olympic rings waiting, as he finished 2nd to Fogg and earned a pool spot in the 1500 in London in March.
