Gold Coast Receives Cash Infusion…..Gold Coast, Australia is set to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games and now the movement has been infused with an additional AUD$2 million (£1.2 million/$1.5 million/€1.4 million) of funding. At the same time a new logo for the organization is revealed, a new partnership between the Australian Institution of Sport (AIS) and Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) was announced this week. The CGA was previously known as the Australian Commonwealth Games Association. Of the collaboration, Steve Moneghetti, Chef de Mission of the Australian team for Gold Coast 2018 said, “As part our mission to do all we can to help sports and athletes prepare for 2018, Commonwealth Games Australia is really pleased to have partnered with the AIS to provide a further $2million in funding directly to athletes.”
More Accolades For Schooling…..Singaporean Olympic gold medalist Joseph Schooling continues to enjoy the limelight since scoring gold in the men’s 100m butterfly at the 2016 Olympic Games. After a parade, monetary bonus and commemorative train exhibit, the Joseph Schooling Sports Scholarship was announced yesterday by the Eurasian Association. The scholarship will support talented athletes in various sports who demonstrate that they can balance their studies with sporting commitments. More details about the scholarship will be released next year.
El Segundo’s New Aquatics Center Updates…..A new Olympic-size outdoor swimming pool and aquatics center is planned for a new high school in El Segundo, California, with the pricing details having now been determined. The El Segundo City Council signed off on an agreement holding the city responsible for no more than $1.8 million of the now $13.8 million pool complex. The Wiseburn Unified School District will cover $6 million. The design includes a 53.2-by-25-meter, 10-lane competition pool, a smaller four-lane teaching pool, stadium seating, lighting and scoreboards.
