In-state and SEC rivals Auburn and Alabama met for their rivalry dual meet today on Auburn’s campus. The Tiger women won all but one event in their 225-75 victory over the Tide. The Tiger men also beat Bama with a final score of 166 to 134.
Freshman Julie Meynen has already established herself as a key player for Auburn women this season, as she’s been bringing in a lot of points in the sprint free races. In today’s meet, she went 1-2 with teammate Ashton Ellzey in the 50 free, winning in 22.74 to Ellzey’s 22.95. Meynen then completed her sweep of the sprint frees with her 49.44 in the 100 free.
Auburn senior Ashley Neidigh locked down the distance events for the Tigers, first swimming to a 9:45.74 victory in the 1000 free ahead of Alabama’s Mia Nonnenberg (9:51.42). Her 2nd win came in the 500 free, where she clocked a 4:48.36 to secure an Auburn 1-2 with teammate Zoe Thatcher (4:49.42).
Natasha Lloyd, another Auburn senior, also swept her specialty events today. Her winning time of 1:01.58 in the 100 breast put her over a second ahead of anyone else in the field. She built and even bigger lead in the 200 breast, where she won by over 2 seconds with her 2:14.87.
After taking 2nd in the 1000, Alabama’s Nonnenberg picked up 2 more top 3 finishes throughout the session. In the final individual race of the meet, she stopped the Tigers from sweeping the events with her 2:01.73 victory in the 200 IM.
On the men’s side, SEC Champion Michael Duderstadt won both breaststroke races for the Tigers. First, he clocked a speedy 53.86 in the 100 breast to beat out Bama’s Pavel Romanov (54.34). Duderstadt returned to the pool for the 200 breast, holding on for his 2nd win in 1:59.94 just ahead of teammate Tommy Brewer (2:00.10) and Bama’s Anton McKee (2:00.56).
Butterfly specialist Luis Martinez and SEC champ Joe Patching also swam to multiple individual titles for the Tigers. Martinez won the 200 fly in 1:47.22 before going on to sweep the fly races with his 47.35 in the 100 fly. Patching won the 200 back in 1:43.53 against Alabama’s Christopher Reid (1:46.16), a 2016 Rio Olympian. He then took his 2nd individual win in the 200 IM with a 1:47.37.
Laurent Bams was a major player for the Crimson Tide today, picking up multiple individual event wins. Bams first took on Patching in the 200 free, winning the race by over a second with his 1:36.09 to Patching’s 1:37.31. Next, Bams went head-to-head with Auburn’s Peter Holoda in the 100 free, winning the race by hundredths with his 43.87 ahead of Holoda’s 43.93.
Freshmen Zane Waddell and Daniel Kober helped Bama sweep the freestyle races, each picking up an individual victory. Waddell came up aheadof a stacked 50 free field to win the race in 20.03. Kober, on the other hand, got his hand on the wall to win the 1000 free in 9:17.40.
