NCAP’s Will Cumberland Verbally Commits to Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Will Cumberland, a member of Nation’s Capital Swim Club and a senior at Patriot High School in Nokesville, Virginia, has made a verbal commitment to join the University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving program in the fall of 2017. Cumberland was a four-time finalist at the 2016 Virginia 6A State Championships, finishing third in the 200 IM (1:50.99), 8th in the 100 back (51.66 prelims), third in the 400 free relay (splitting 46.87), and first in the 200 medley relay (with a 23.71 leadoff). The Patriot quartet broke both the 6A and the All-Time VA record with their swim, downing marks previously held by such Virginia prep stars as John Shebat and Andrew Seliskar. (Cumberland’s Patriot teammates on that relay, Spencer Rowe, Cole Cooper, and AJ Ross, all swim with him at NCAP under Jeremy Linn).

Cumberland is a Winter Nationals qualifier in the 100/200 backstrokes, 100 fly, and 200 IM. He is a three-time All-American (200 IM, 200 medley relay, and 200 free relay), and a 2014-15 USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. At the recent Futures Championships in College Park, Maryland, Cumberland was runner-up in the 200 IM, finished top-8 in the 100 fly, and was a B-finalist in the 100 back and 400 IM. His top SCY times are as follows:

  SCY
50 fly 22.23
100 fly 49.30
200 fly 1:51.26
50 back 22.98
100 back 50.13
200 back 1:47.09
200 IM 1:50.22
400 IM 3:54.37

Cumberland is the first commit to the Fighting Irish men’s team; UND received verbals from Cailey Grunhard and Lindsay Stone earlier this summer.
