2016 MARIA LENK TROPHY OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Etiene Medeiros not only achieved the FINA ‘A’ cut in the women’s 100m back, but did it twice. In the prelims session, she posted 1:00.00 for a new Maria Lenk Trophy Championship Record and clocked a slightly slower time of 1:00.11 in the finals edition. No other woman achieved the FINA standard as Slovakian swimmer Katarina Listopadova finished second to Medeiros with 1:00.67.

Coming out of the Brazil Open in December, Nicolas Oliveira (1:47.09) and Joao de Lucca (1:47.81) were the only ones to have obtained a FINA ‘A’ standard in the men’s 200m free. Today’s competition saw Oliveira improve upon that time in the morning with 1:46.97 and drop off hard in finals at 1:48.17. de Lucca also managed to slip under his Brazil Open time and claim the winning time tonight (1:47.65) over Federico Grabich, the Argentine swimmer who missed the ‘A’ standard by one one-hundredth of a second.

Concerning the Brazilian Rio 800m free relay, Luis Melo (1:48.29) and Andre Pereira (1:48.72) will join Oliveira and de Lucca to represent the host country come August.

No woman was able to best the FINA ‘A’ standard of 1:07.85 in the 100m breast, however, Argentina’s Macarena Ceballos bested all the Brazilians in the field including Jhennifer Alves (1:08.31) and Julia Sebastian (1:08.85).

For the 100m back, Guilherme Guido already registered his FINA ‘A’ cut at the Brazil Open with a national record of 53.09, but came within a hair’s breadth of lowering it in prelims when he touched in at 53.10. Guido returned for finals for a 53.25, his third swim under the standard, and defeated his nearest competitor Henrique Rodrigues by over a second.

The day’s last event, the women’s 400m free, saw no FINA standards but did witness Manuella Lyrio lower her own Brazilian National Record down to 4:09.48 from 4:09.96.
