Florida senior Kahlia Warner is the top qualifier tonight in the women’s 3 meter, after scoring 381.20, nearly fourteen points over second-seed Sharae Zheng of Nevada (367.10 points).
Warner, this year’s SEC champion in this event, has made huge strides from last year’s meet, when she finished 28th on the 3 meter.
The Florida team currently sits in 20th place (19.5 points) and Nevada is at 17th (29 points), so the point potential from this event could make a big difference for both teams. Most of Nevada’s points came from Zheng’s victory on the one meter yesterday.
UCLA is in a similar position with third-seed sophomore Maria Polyakova, who finished fourth in the event last year. UCLA currently sits in 16th place with 37 points.
Miami’s Pei Lin is seeded fourth with 344.35, followed by Minnesota’s Yu Zhou with 337.35.
Indiana’s Lacey Houser, seeded sixth, could potentially give a boost to the Hoosiers, who are currently tied for ninth with NC State (66 points) and well within striking distance of Arizona (71 points) and Louisville (94 points). However, with the 100 and 200 fly finals yet to come, Louisville’s golden girl Kelsi Worrell should move the Cardinals out of reach.
Gracia Leydon-Mahoney, seeded 7th with 328.70, could also score some much-needed points for Stanford, who sit in a disappointing sixth place after their big DQ in the 200 free relay last night.
Mary Dunnichay of Purdue will round out the ‘A’ final tonight.
None of the top five teams, Georgia, California, USC, Virginia, or Texas A&M, placed divers in the championship final.
