World Championship team member Richard Funk and Ashley McGregor had dominating wins in the 200 breaststroke on the first night of competition in Montreal and both followed that up with victories in the 100 breaststroke.
Funk, who won the Pan American Games bronze medal in the event, took the men’s 17 & over 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:01.78 finishing almost three seconds ahead of the field. McGregor’s win wasn’t quite as convincing. She hit the wall first in a time of 1:10.23, but was challenged by Marie-Sole Jean-Lachapelle who finished second in a time of 1:10.88.
The men’s 16 & under event was a thriller with only 29 one-hundredths of a second separating Andrew Bornstein, Graeme Aylward and Leon Zin. Bornstein won the event in a time of 1:06.00 followed by Aylward who recorded a 1:06.22 and Zin who finished in a time of 1:06.29.
In the women’s 16 & over 100 freestyle Sandrine Mainville captured the gold in a time of 54.38 finishing ahead of Pan American Games gold medalist Chantal Van Landeghem who posted a time of 55.10. In the men’s event Marcelo Chierighini touched first in a time of 49.70 finishing a second ahead of World Championship team member Karl Krug who posted a 50.70.
Tai Long Singh was the star of the men’s 16 & under events winning both the 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke. Singh took the 100 freestyle in a time of 51.86 and the 50 backstroke in a 27.12.
Madison Broad, who won the women’s 15 & under 50 backstroke, posted the fastest time of the evening taking the event in a 28.87. Daphne Danyluk won the 16 & over event in a time of 29.05.
