Cseh Breaks Rogan’s 2009 European Record in the Men’s 200 IM

Hungarian Laszlo Cseh started the competition by breaking his own national record in the men’s 100 butterfly in both the semi-final and final, eventually taking over a second off of his record coming into the competition. Cseh continued on a hot streak today breaking the European record in the 200 IM.

Cseh, who took the prelim extremely easy posting a 1:54.37, broke the record of 1:51.72 set by Austrian Markus Rogan in 2009 at the European Championships in Istanbul. The Hungarian also bettered his own national record of 1:52.74, which he put up in 2012.

Cseh took the race out close to a second under Rogan’s record split at the 50 meter mark. Cseh stayed ahead of record pace, although had backstroke and breaststroke splits slower than Rogan’s. Cseh finished the race off with a strong final 50 11 one-hundredths of a second faster than Rogan’s split time.

Cseh’s time places him atop of the world rankings, nearly two seconds ahead of German Philip Heintz who recorded a 1:53.21 in tonight’s final.
