Connecticut Masters Take Down World Mark

This past Sunday at the 15th Annual Wilton Wahoo Masters Summer Sizzler held at the Melissa Nickel Pool at the Wilton branch of the Riverbrook Regional YMCA, a relay made up of 4 Connecticut Masters swimmers swam their way into the record books. They took down both the USMS National record and the FINA Masters World record in the 4 x 200 free relay.

Swimming in the Mixed 200 – 239 800 meter free relay, the foursome of Jeff Sargent (51), Andy Reul (52), Tait Michael (52) and Galen Rinaldi (45) combined for a time of 9:19.01 taking 8.79 seconds off the previous record of 9:27.80 set by a team from the Sarasota YMCA Sharks Masters in June, 2010.

This relay record has been in their sights for the past 2 years as they tried and failed to take the mark in 2013 and 2014, both years coming away with a World Number 1 ranking but no record.

In masters swimming, the the mixed 200 – 239 age group is based on the combined total of all the swimmers’ ages.

Sargent, Reul and Michael train long course meters at the Wilton Branch of the Riverbrook Regional YMCA and at Swim 70 (Norwalk, CT). Rinaldi, trains at the Cornerstone Aquatics Center located in West Hartford, CT.
