Birmingham-Southern College swimmer Duncan Bonney has been arrested by Birmingham police and charged with 18 counts of third-degree burglary, according to al.com.
Bonney, a native of South Africa, is accused of having stolen a master key to the school’s dorm rooms and using it to enter 18 rooms. An investigation by Birmingham police alleges that he stole items from textbooks to watches and electronics like video game consoles and high-end calculators.
“Duncan is a good young man and has cooperated fully with the investigating detective,” said Birmingham attorney Chris Daniel to Al.com. “His family in South Africa has expressed their complete support and we are working through the legal process together.”
The break-ins happened between March 13th and 22nd, while most of the university’s students were on spring break. The NCAA Championships, in which Bonney competed, were held between March 19th and 22nd in Houston, Texas.
Bonney earned CSCAA All-America honors in three different events. He placed 16th in the 200 IM (1:51.45), 8th in the 100 breaststroke (56.55) after winning a swim-off to make the A-Final, and was part of Birmingham Southern’s 8th-place 800 free relay.
Bonney, who just completed his junior season, is no longer listed on Birmingham Southern’s roster. A request for comment to the school’s athletics department was not immediately returned, but Al.com quotes the university’s president as saying that “when the perpetrator was identified, he was dismissed.”
Bonney’s bond has been set at $180,000.
Burglary in the third degree is a Class C felony in Alabama, with each charge carrying a sentencing guideline of no less than one year and one day and no more than 10 years in prison.

I have known Duncan for many years. I am devastated by this news as his parents must also be. He has always been a delightful young man and something happened to make him do something like this. Love you all and God Bless 8
The campus had an issue with this man his freshman year, but they hid it under the rug. Someone should ask the campus about this incident, if they would have stood up for their students this issue could have been avoided.

I am shocked Duncan was my swimmer in Cape Town between 2006-2009. His sister also swam with me. She was a hard worker and good swimmer. Duncan was more talented but he didn’t like hard work.

He was charged with the crime…innocent until proven guilty. The “good young man” comment is from a lawyer, most likely his defense. What is he supposed to say? “My client is a scum bag”
