John Scantling

John Scantling

Background

In the Scantling household swimming was a “mandatory fun” activity and John was put in the pool almost as soon as he could walk. Luckily, it clicked and John was hooked for life. He pursued swimming with the Firestone Akron Swim Team and later his high school team. John is now swimming at John Carroll University where he majors in Accounting and History. When he’s not swimming, John likes to read, play video games and travel.

High School

Under the direction of head coach Cindy Virdo, John competed for the Firestone Falcons. Throughout his four years with the program, he qualified for the state meet in both individual and relay events. John also placed on the podium in the district meet. The Firestone program emphasized the mental toughness component of swimming and this is something John took with him as he moved to the collegiate level.

College

2013-2014: John’s freshman season as a John Carroll Blue Streak was filled with personal bests in freestyle events. At the Ohio Athletic Conference meet he placed top 8 individually and was a part of 2 All-OAC relays. While he had plenty of success, some of John’s favorite memories of the season are from the team training trip to Florida where he slept in a giant closet.

2014-2015: In his sophomore season, John traded the 500-yard freestyle for the 200-yard I.M. It proved to be a good trade-off, at the OAC meet, he swam a 1:59. 77  which was good for a top 8 finish. His other 2 events, the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle, John set new personal bests and had 2 All-OAC finishes.
