Montclair State Beats Conference Rivals Rowan For First Time Since 1980’s

It’s been over 20 years since the Montclair State women’s swim team has topped Metropolitan Conference Championships Rowan University in women’s swimming. That includes last year, where Rowan State won by a comfortable 36 points.

On Saturday, Division III Montclair State not only broke the streak, they did so in style, winning by a final margin of 165-115 on senior day.

Montclair State Release

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women’s swimming and diving team celebrated the careers of their five senior members prior to its meet with Rowan on Saturday. By meet’s end, those seniors celebrated much with their teammates.

Led by three individual wins from senior KATHLEEN FRENCH, MSU knocked off Rowan University for the first time in almost three decades with a 165-115 win.

Not since the 1980s has Montclair emerged victorious against their NJAC rivals, however that all changed as the Red Hawks (4-4-1, 1-1 NJAC) captured 11 events in winning their second consecutive dual meet. Meanwhile the MSU men (2-8, 0-2 NJAC) fell to the Profs 191-102.

French swept both breaststroke events and another in the 200 individual medley as Montclair had five different competitors win two or more individual events. French swept the breaststroke events winning the 100 in a time of 1:11.33 leading a 1-2 MSU finish. She collected her second win in the 200 event posting a time of 2:33.70 before completing her day leading a 1-2-3 showing by the Red Hawks in the 200 IM. French posted a time of 2:20.48 in winning the event with classmate CHRISTINE WERNER and junior Katie LaCava finishing second and third, respectively with time of 2:20.75 and 2:21.03.

Junior SYDNEY STEIN won both long distance freestyle events taking top honors in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 11:07.63 before winning the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:25.02. LaCava was a winner in both butterfly events as she captured the 200 in a time of 2:15.45 in addition to winning the 100 in 1:02.36.

SAMANTHA DOWD claimed victory in the 100 and 200 freestyle registering a time of 56.62 in the 100 event and 2:04.81 in the 200 event. Freshman ERIN CANNON did the same in the backstroke events taking first in the 100 with a time of 1:04.21 before coming back to win the 200 in a time of 2:16.63.

Cannon, Werner, KARA O’SULLIVAN and Dowd combined to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:57.29.

For the MSU men, ALAN BUOB took first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.24. Freshman DEVON D’AGOSTA had the same placing in the 200 individual medley recording a time of 2:08.23. D’Agosta was also second in the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 57.27 and 2:05.17, respectively. BRENDAN TURNER was second in the 50 freestyle (23.71 seconds) and SAMUEL MITCHELL was second in the one-meter diving event with a score of 137.25 points.

The Red Hawk men return to action on Wednesday, January 21 when it travels to Poughkeepsie, NY to face Vassar College at 6:00 pm. Both teams will then head to Mahwah, NJ on Saturday, January 24 taking on Ramapo College at 1:00 pm.

Rowan State Release

MONTCLAIR, NJ  – The Rowan University women’s swimming and diving team lost to conference opponent Montclair State University, 165-115 on Saturday.

The Profs are 7-2 overall while the Red Hawks have a 4-4-1 record.  Both teams are 1-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  Rowan took first place (3:50.17) in the 400 freestyle relay with Julie Sheehan (so. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.), Olivia Wojtowicz (jr. Centreville, MD/Queen Anne’s County), Polina Dineva(fr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) and Leanne Zaug (sr. Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park).

Zaug was the winner (2:04.19) in the 200 freestyle.  Sheehan took first (26.33) in the 50 free followed by Dineva, second (26.44).  In the 100 freestyle, Sheehan and Zaug were second (56.64) and third (57.22) respectively.

Ana Cubit (fr. Maple Glen, PA/Upper Dublin) had first places in the one-meter diving, five dives (150.67 points) and six dives (195.15 points).  Nicole Vick (sr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) finished second (11:29.11) in the 1000 freestyle.  Ashley El Naggar (jr. Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) took second (1:05.08) in the 100 backstroke and third (2:20.93) in the 200 backstroke.

Rikki Berk (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) was second (2:21.94) in the 200 butterfly and third (1:04.03) in the 100 butterfly.  Wojtowicz had a second place (2:34.85) in the 200 breaststroke and she was third (1:11.61) in the 100 breaststroke.  Julia DelNero (jr. Spring Lake Heights, NJ/ Red Bank Catholic) came in second (5:32.97) in the 500 freestyle and third (2:05.80) in the 200 free.

Next week, Rowan hosts conference rival The College of New Jersey on Saturday, January 24 at 2 p.m.
