The 2014 TYR Champions Cup (14U) concluded earlier today at the Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatic Center and when the action finished the boys of Stanford Water Polo Club and the girls of Diablo Water Polo Club were crowned champions. Diablo defeated Rose Bowl 10-8 to claim the gold medal while SOCAL topped Santa Barbara 12-7 for the bronze medal in the girl’s division. The Stanford boys defeated Newport 12-8 to claim gold and 680 outlasted San Diego Shores 12-11 in a shootout. In the rest of the girl’s division 680 downed Commerce 8-2 for fifth place with Chicago Park District sliding past Lamorinda 11-10 for seventh place. Rounding out the standings were San Diego Shores in ninth place, Santa Barbara ‘B’ in 10th, Viper Pigeons in 11th, and Thunder in 12th. On the boy’s side, OCWP defeated Commerce 11-9 for fifth place while LA Premier foiled Greenwich 8-3 for seventh place. The rest of the standings in the boy’s division saw Chicago Park District in ninth, Thunder in 10th, YCF in 11th, and St. Marks in 12th.
Prior to the first and third place games beginning, the Jody Campbell and Maureen O’Toole Sportsmanship Awards were presented to athletes from each team competing at the TYR Champions Cup. Campbell and O’Toole have a storied history within USA Water Polo as Campbell helped the USA Men’s Olympic Water Polo Team to consecutive silver medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games while O’Toole was a key member of the USA Women’s Olympic Water Polo Team that won silver at the 2000 Olympic Games, the first to ever offer women’s water polo.
