USC Trojans Get Verbal Commitment from Local Butterflier Tamara Santoyo

Tamara Santoyo, of William S. Hart High School in Newhall and Canyons Aquatic Club, has made a verbal agreement to join the University of Southern California next fall.

Santoyo is an All-American butterflier whose 53.04 in the 100 was the seventh-fastest time for (non-college) 17-18 year old girls in the country last season. She finished second at CIF-SS Division 1 finals to Katie McLaughlin, who broke the national high school record with her swim. She was also fourth in the 50 free, in a race in which her Canyons teammate Abbey Weitzeil broke the national high school record, too.

The Trojans are counting on some of that good fortune to rub off on them, too. Santoyo’s best 100 fly would have scored in the Pac-12 B-final; her 200 fly would have been on the B/C-final bubble, and her 50 free should get her a second swim as well.

50y fly: 27.84
100y fly: 53.04
200y fly: 1:59.60
50y free: 22.94
100y free: 50.59
200y free: 1:49.40

Not to read too much into this announcement about Tamara, but the key words in the article were “heading down I-5 to USC” and “Canyons team mate Abbey Weitzeil” Could this be the start of a tri-fecta or the Trojans to include Weitzeil and Canyons and Hart H.S. class mate Cole Cogswell? It would be great to have Salo keep this kind of super local SoCal talent home instead of seeing it go north to the Bay area with Katie McLaughlin and Ella Eastin. Just hopin’!
