San Diego State Gets Verbal from CIF-SS D4 Record-Holder Kiri Harvey of Cerritos

Cerritos High School senior Kiri Harvey has decided to stay in California, having given her verbal commitment to the San Diego State Aztecs for the 2015-16 season.

Harvey is a two-time CIF-Southern Section Division IV champion in both the 200 IM and 500 free. She has made vast improvements in these events during her high school years. At the 2013 high school championship she went 2:06.29 and 5:04.64 to win the respective events. This past May she improved to 2:05.13 and 4:59.12, this time setting the D4 record in each.

Perhaps even more impressive is the trajectory of her backstroke. At 2013 CIF she swam fly on Cerritos High’s medley relay; by 2014 she was their backstroker. Swimming with La Mirada Armada at NASA Junior Nationals in March, Harvey clocked a 2:00.38 in the 200 back for a Winter Nationals cut, dropping over 5 seconds year-to-year.

Harvey’s best times to date are:

200y back: 2:00.38            200m back: 2:24.37
200y IM: 2:05.13               200m IM: 2:25.27
200y free: 1:51.65            200m free: 2:06.35
500y free: 4:55.95            400m free: 4:25.51

San Diego State had a lot of success in the backstroke and IM events, especially with their underclassmen, at the 2014 Mountain West Conference Championships but they needed more point scorers in distance free. Harvey puts in a lot of mileage training with Coach Rick Shipherd so she should be ready to take on the longer events.

It will be interesting to see what San Diego State has planned for Harvey; she really is versatile enough to slip in wherever the Aztecs need her most.
