The 2026 Boise Sectionals came to a close on Sunday night, as did a weekend of top performances by 16-year-old Zayda Miehl.
Miehl, who swims for Corvallis Aquatic Team in Oregon, completed a sweep of the distance freestyle events with a victory in the women’s 1500 free Sunday afternoon. She stopped the clock in 16:45.52, almost 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Leila Stafford; Miehl was just under 13 seconds off of her lifetime best (16:32.77) from May.
Earlier in the meet, Miehl won the 400 free (4:18.39) and the 800 free (8:49.54), proving to be an unstoppable force in the distance events.
Stafford, 17, also logged a noteworthy performance in the 1500 free, claiming the runner-up spot in 17:03.66 and knocking about 19 seconds off her personal best time, which previously stood at 17:22.63. Her performance ranks her 13th in the country so far this season in the girls’ 17-18 age group.
The victories in the women’s freestyle events ended up being split between just two swimmers, as Tara Joyce completed a sweep of the sprint free distances on the final day of racing. The University of Wyoming athlete prevailed in the 50 free Sunday night, racing to victory in a season-best time of 26.15.
Joyce, 21, had already claimed the championship titles in the 100 free (56.88) and 200 free (2:03.08), clocking season-best times in both events.
On the men’s side, Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Ashton Joswiak turned in a strong performance in the 1500 free. He won the event in 16:00.05, racing into the wall almost 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Patrick Dunn (16:15.98) and adding just under three seconds to his lifetime best.
Joswiak’s performance landed him in the #22 spot on the ranking of top times this season in the boys’ 17-18 age group.
Scottsdale Aquatic Club teammate Mason Edmund delivered back-to-back fast swims to close out his weekend. The 22-year-old, who swam for Ohio State, prevailed in the 200 fly in a time of 2:02.30 before taking 3rd in the 50 free with a best time of 23.69 in the very next event.
Carter Bradley, 18, of Foothills Swim Team posted an eye-catching performance in the men’s 200 IM. He came into the meet with a lifetime best time of 2:11.66 from 2024 and proceeded to throw down a best time of 2:08.88 during prelims before clinching the victory in 2:07.38. Bradley was the only competitor in the field to go under 2:08, and one of only three to go under 2:10.
