I have my opinions on what online betting has done to sports and I personally hate it. That being said if swimming actually wants to see growth and attract new fans then this is not only necessary but should have been done sooner. You can’t just come up with a new swim league every couple years and expect people to care. Unfortunately sports betting is a major part of sports now. Swimming has been behind in just about every aspect compared to other sports. This is a good first step
So is swimming being added to existing betting platforms like FanDuel, etc? Or is there going to be a separate platform just for swimming and other Olympic sports?
Utterly disappointing coming from such a swimming legend.
Betting and, implicitly, sports betting have ruined countless lives by exploiting people’s vulnerability and mirage of earning fast money.
Hope the public in the US realizes quickly how wrong this is for the great swimming culture they have spent many years creating.
The argument that “people can choose if they want to partake in such activities and thus I cannot be held liable if this ends up fueling their addiction” is total bogus, considering the vast majority of betters are simply addicted, just as if they were to a substance. Do better.
I am really tired of people demanding to live in a nerfed world where the onus is placed on everyone else to make sure that their actions must never allow anyone anywhere to do anything that may allow someone to make a bad decision. My advice, make better decisions for yourself.
Swimming is also a sport where you have many minors competing at a high level , especially on the women’s side. Are you going to bet for or against them? Seems sketchy and wrong to me.
There are very specific laws in place, often varying state-to-state, that must be strictly adhered to. The regulatory piece of this, as you can imagine, is substantial.
I mean this seriously and not as mockery: if you don’t like gambling/think it’s immoral etc that is fine justification. But I’m not sure what would make gambling ok on male athletes but not female athletes (I understand the age argument a little more, but not fully). Are they more susceptible to intentionally throwing races because they’re bribed by bettors who want an edge? Is the argument that they can’t handle the pressure of being bet on? I imagine the pressure of trying to win Olympic gold with the world watching will greatly exceed the pressure of knowing people bet on you. Help me understand your hypothesized impact on the athletes here
I was not a GH fan before and even less so now.
Professional athletes in other sports like NFL NBA MLB where betting is common are somewhat more protected and there is more oversight in place by their federations. Swimmers are more exposed to potential threats against their person by persons tied to gambling interests. For instance, most swimmers do not have personal security or anyone watching their back like pro footballers and baseball and basketball players do. I think the situation potentially endangers female swimmers in particular to threats , intimidation and harassment.
I think gambling is immoral, and the people that enable it (and especially those that try to normalize it) should be treated with at least as much disdain as illegal narcotic dealers. The harm it causes to individuals and eventually society as a whole makes this industry impossible to justify imo
If we put all of this aside (which I feel we can entertain since it’s being normalized anyway), I’m really happy to see swimming try a new form of revenue generation and fan engagement. It’s awful that it has to be this way, but at least it does do that
I begrudgingly agree with you. Personally I hate sports gambling it ruins the integrity of sport but there’s no denying it’s done great things in terms of watching. People are watching more sports now than ever before because they are betting on them
And what about the legal narcotic dealers?
