Stonehill Coach Matthew Distler Resigns Ahead of Men’s Program Inaugural Season

Matthew Distler has resigned from his head coaching position at Stonehill College. Stonehill is set to add a men’s swimming and diving program with the team’s first season being this fall.

Distler told SwimSwam that he has taken a job outside of coaching. “I’d like to thank Matt for his efforts leading our women’s swimming & diving program for the past four seasons, and wish him the very best in the future,” Stonehill’s Athletic Director Dean O’Keefe said.

Distler has led the women’s swimming and diving program for the last four years as he arrived in 2022. That coincided with the school’s move from Division II to Division I. The school announced they would begin the transition in 2022 and completed its accelerated reclassification in summer 2025.

The Stonehill women finished 6th out of seven teams at the 2026 NEC Championships with 299 points. Grace Idowu led the team with a 7th place finish in the 100 back (57.42) and 8th place finish in the 50 free (23.76).

Last fall, the school announced that they would add a men’s swimming and diving program, with the team’s first season to begin this fall with the 2026-2027 season. The men’s swimming and diving program will join the women in the Northeast Athletic Conference (NEC), bringing the total to five NEC men’s programs. The Howard men captured the 2025 NEC crown with 883 points. The NEC began sponsoring men’s swimming and diving in the 2020-2021 season.

Also set to add men’s swimming and diving this fall is Saint Mary’s College of California. Saint Mary’s College of California and Marquette University will each add a women’s program this fall.
